We are watching one of the wildest things a nation-state has ever done: A superpower is committing suicide because the GOP Congress is too cowardly to stand up to the Mad King.

This is one of the wildest moments in all of geopolitics ever.

It is incredibly frustrating that all I can do is scream at my two perfectly useless senators while these MAGA fools go out of their way to inaugurate a truly chaotic multipolar era that has a decent chance of killing all of our children.

It's just madness. Absolute madness.
I have lived in DK for 20~ years.

The last 18 days the DK & US relationship has plunged from "ok, we can handle Trump for now but we hope Americans choose differently next time" to "so, war? OK. No, do not invite the US to a party commemorating DK&US history held since 1912, in fact cancel it"

It goes without saying that in the US you’re not supposed to have a masked secret police that snatches people off the streets without knowing if they’ve committed a crime. That’s about as basic a requirement for a democracy as exists.
Having seen several abductions up close, it is really hard to convey how much the thing they’re doing is roaming in military convoys until they see someone who is alone and isn’t white, and then jumping out in large numbers, pulling them into a van, and screeching off, all in 90 seconds or so.
"“They specifically asked me if I knew where the Hmong families lived on my street & in the neighborhood.” Lugert-Thom responded, “I don’t know anything about that” & she said they then asked, “Well, what about the Asian families?”"

"“I was a bit shaken & a bit shocked of what I was asked to do.”"

It's actually a good thing that previously apolitical normies are finally getting angry and starting to speak out. We need the numbers in the streets and at the polls.

If your response to them is "no, fuck you, too late," then you don't actually care about stopping Trump. You're just preening.

Warnings are just hysteria unless accompanied by a Y chromosome.
Literally, everything #Clinton and #Harris said was going to happen if #trump was elected, have all come to pass. Many of them are far worse and in more depraved ways than they suggested when they tried to warn us in 2015 and 2024.

I can't say this loudly enough: THEY ARE TRYING TO NORMALIZE THE KILLING OF CIVILIANS FOR PARTICIPATING IN FIRST AMENDMENT PROTECTED PROTEST ACTIVITIES.
Homan: "We gotta stop the hateful rhetoric. Saying this officer is a murderer is dangerous. It's just ridiculous. It's gonna infuriate people more which means there's gonna be more incidents like this."

Trump sent thousands of armed federal officers into our state, and it took just one day for them to kill someone.

Now he wants nothing more than to see chaos distract from that horrific action.

Don’t give him what he wants.

When you succumb to the cynicism, you are helping Trump. He wants you to think that all is lost, that he is all powerful, and that there is nothing we can do.

The fight for democracy is hard, but it is worth having. We have shown we can stand tall. We have shown we can win.
Many of you have become drama-addicted doomers, and you seem to think it's important for the rest of us to join you.

Yes, things are bad. But change is within our power. Grow up. Act like sober, responsible adults in a democracy instead of cynical, all-is-lost teenagers.

Now get off my lawn.

AFAIK, in 200 years, only 3 times did a country elect someone who had attempted a coup:

- Louis Napoleon (France, 1848)
- Adolf Hitler (Germany, 1933)
- Hugo Chavez (Venezuela, 1998)

Each one became dictator. I think we will be the first exception, but it's not something you screw around with.
The American people electing Trump after he staged a coup attempt 5 years ago was a nail in the coffin of our democracy. You can rationalize it all you want - But inflation! But wokeness! - but ultimately it was a societal suicide attempt and probably the dumbest collective voting decision ever made

It's the pragmatism for me. Mamdani & Walz evoke the "git 'er done" civic spirit that de Tocqueville praised 200yrs ago.

The same understanding--"we can solve our problems better together"--that makes us cry watching George Bailey stop the run on the ol' Savings & Loan in "It's A Wonderful Life."

Bending your institution to meet the prejudices of your dumbest, meanest students is a surefire way to destroy a university.

Now any student can just scrawl “the Bible says this is wrong” on any test and skate to an A at the Oklahoma Football Outlet and Diploma Factory.

"All is lost" narratives are popular because people generally do not want to take action. Taking action is tiring so if all is lost, you are off the hook. Nothing is more seductive than not having to do anything.

As his approval sinks, Trump will turn to the emotion from which his power derives: fear.

Fear closes us off from each other, weakens what is our strength, deprives us of our future and only serves to secure his.

The antidote is hope. An autocrat cannot defeat a hopeful people. Hold fast to it.
