USPS quietly changed its postmark rules — mail is no longer dated when you drop it off. The “official” date is when it hits automated sorting — sometimes days later

Which could have major implications for mail in voting — it’s a clever way to disenfranchise voters that’s going largely overlooked

I’m sorry, but it is disgraceful to be an academic who uses this technology to conduct research. It should be prohibited in all of our scholarly institutions, including universities and journals.

What won't AI take from us?
I hate that AI has made me approach cute animal videos with an air of suspicion. I resent having to harden my heart to the possibility of an unlikely friendship between a very large dog and a very small one

No sane person wants to "negotiate" for their healthcare.

We want to go to the doctor, have it covered as a publicly funded social good (because it is!), and focus on healing, not further harm through profit-seeking bullshit and bankruptcy.
Trump: "I want the money to go into an account for people where they buy their own health insurance. It's so good. The insurance will be better. It'll cost less. Everybody is gonna be happy. They're gonna feel like entrepreneurs. They're actually able to go out & negotiate their own insurance"

This interpretation of Tolkien's work would get an F as a book report, with a "See me" note from the teacher, because they definitely don't believe you read the book or even finished the movie.

"But, Matthew, what is "acting right" when it comes to books?"

Here's a handy guide adapted from Ranganathan:

1. Every book its reader
2. Every reader its book
3. Don't like a book, don't read it
4. Let other people read what they want
5. Libraries are for everyone

As union membership goes down, more wealth gets transferred up to the top 10% from the working class.

There’s a reason why corporations and billionaires spend $400 million per year busting unions.

My students, who attend a working-class rust-belt college, openly talk abt how much they hate AI & are afraid of its consequences. I wonder how much of the oft-reported student enthusiasm for the tech is the merely result of the NYT’s Ivy League bias

All of the penicillin in use worldwide comes from a strain of mold that was growing on a cantaloupe bought at a grocery store in Peoria, Illinois in 1942.
What’s your favorite food fact that is true but sounds totally made up?

I’ll start: about half of the mushrooms produced across the United States of America each year (more than 300 million pounds of mushrooms in recent years) are produced in *one county* in Pennsylvania.

Because why encourage people to continue to get the safe, inexpensive, and extremely effective vaccine when you can create expensive treatments for a problem that should be all but eradicated by now?
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will direct federal health agencies to explore potential new treatments for measles as the U.S. faces its largest outbreak in 25 years. Experts fear the decision could have grave consequences, as studies show the existing vaccine is 97% effective in preventing infection.
RFK Jr. Orders Search for New Measles Treatments Instead of Urging Vaccination
Decades of research have turned up no miracle treatment for measles, but studies show the M.M.R. shot is 97 percent effective in preventing the disease.
