I dunno if the 80s were more filled with existential crises than most decades. It seems like we keep on manufacturing crises, faster than we can resolve them.

AIDS was happening, and it really affected how people thought about sex, and the Satanic panic really has some displaced sexual anxiety energy. And hanging over all of this was Nuclear Winter and the imminent annihilation of the human race.

We tend to forget that there was a very significant scandal about priests molesting children in the mid-80s, and I do wonder how that played into the way the Church supported the authors of _Michelle Remembers_ and the Satanic panic in general.

I was in my 20s during the 80s, but they now seem like a somewhat undifferentiated mass. I am wondering, though, about other cultural touchstones of the time and how they played in.

Sarah, please tell me you know that the bear in the Reagan campaign ad was the Soviet Union. There was even a very funny Doonesbury comic which I wish I could find.
