A queer Mexican trying to write queer Mexican rep

A bit daunting starting from scratch, but something tells me a book about queer brown boys fighting the forces of evil and falling in love along the way wouldn't be welcome on the other app, so here I am.

Now why am I getting accused by other established authors of discouraging aspiring writers to "thin the competition" when I'm just being honest about how publishing is a business that values marketability over quality and therefore people shouldn't let rejections affect their self-worth

“You have a therapist?”

“Of course I do, Dawn. Revolutionary cells and freelance murderers have excellent mental-health benefits. It’s in the union plan next to dental and vision."

Wherever possible please buy your books directly from authors and/or publishers. Even ebooks (then Amazon can't delete them either). We make a better cut and you get the same thing or better, plus Bezos and ilk don't get richer. Win win win.

I am OFFICIALLY halfway done with my first draft. That's probably a lame milestone, but life has kicked my ass so hard in the last year in a way that's made writing feel impossible, so being able to make it even this far feels so huge to me.

I support indie writers - but I also support artists. If your cover is AI generated, that's a no for me.

A reminder that @scarleteen.bsky.social is 100% queer and trans run and will ALWAYS be providing educational materials, support, and more to youth seeking sex, relationships, and health education from a source who won't casually erase their existence with their political winds.
1. Three sexual abuse nonprofits have removed all or nearly all references to trans, queer and non binary people (h/t @devtesla.bsky.social)

I wrote a second article today to document and archive some of the impacted pages.

Friend: that's such a cool idea for a story! So how far along are you with writing it?

Me: mentally? I'm writing the climactic finale to my 5 book series. Physically? lol

When I worked at Blockbuster, I wrote on receipt paper while I restocked movies. When I worked at Lowe's, I wrote on paper towels while standing at the register. When I became an academic editor, I took micro breaks throughout the day to jot down a few words.

Steal the time. You won't get it again.
"But how am I supposed to find time for my art when I'm working full time?"
Time theft. You commit time theft. You're already getting screwed by your employers. They're not paying you enough for the time you give them. Do it on the clock. Even if it's just a few words on a scrap of paper.

I find myself struggling with the "coming to terms with not being cishet" parts of my book. It's not the main plot of the story, but it's a big aspect of the main characters' development and the "coming of age" theme. I almost feel like it's been done to death in queer media and I need to move on.

Unsolicited writing advice, no. #3520: When naming characters, consider the following: age, socio-economic group, geographical location, parents (why did they choose that name?). All this matters to the authenticity of your protagonist. And it matters double if it’s a person from another country.
