Today was an emotional, community-embracing, hard-road-ahead facing, goodbye for now. Rather than my usual turn to toxic positivity, I am taking the evening to sit with the sad parting with the NEH that was. This is the song that has been my warm today. 😢 youtu.be/X_qjhckmLTQ?...

So insulting to the diligent employees, reviewers, & applicants. That second paragraph alone suggests prior awards weren’t merit-based & erodes any confidence I might have that future awards will be merit-based. Phrases like “extreme ideologies based upon race or gender” are racist & misogynistic.
Exactly two weeks after abolishing the positions of 116 #NEH dedicated civil servants, the agency releases a statement that is an utter insult to the ethical guidelines and regulations to which we staff, as well as our panelists and applicants, have *always* rigorously adhered. #humanities

I ran grant programs at @nehgov.bsky.social for over a decade. With colleagues, oversaw review of thousands of grant applications. Witnessed care & thoughtfulness of hundreds of reviewers. This statement is insulting to all of them. Whoever wrote it should be ashamed.
