I was going through 1943 editions of the @newstatesman.com today and was delighted to learn that at a critical phase of the war its readers got massively distracted, in a totally British way, by a competition to write a limerick about fish. My top 3 follow.

Just want to say - the film #Conclave - the trailer preceded every film I saw for weeks and weeks. Maybe months actually. (I go to the pictures quite a lot.) I was excited to see it. All of a sudden, I had bloody missed it. I never even saw it at my local cinema. It was there for a few days. WHY??!!

Haven’t listened to this for a while. It’s taking me back… I was really small, Mum and Dad were really sad, and Dad in particular played this record over and over - John had died. Now this is my record, and I’m surprised I remember so many of the beats and lyrics. #JohnLennon

Kylie. It was awful - I felt David’s shock and heartbreak. It was brilliantly acted. I feel genuinely sad right now, thinking about it. (I need to get a life, maybe!!)
