The crux of the #BBC crisis is that they are being forced to treat Trump's criminality as mere opinion, and to be normalised. It chills me that this behaviour is unaccountable. Every accusation is returned to sender and culpability for the offense projected onto the accuser.

Centrist Democrats in the Senate folded on the shutdown, throwing away their leverage in exchange for worthless GOP promises.

The #BBC should pull the #Panorama program and just play the US Congress January 6th Hearings on a loop.

What I'll never understand abt "moderate" Dem enthusiasm for risking it all to do a deal w Republicans is that the regime has ALREADY SHOWN that they will act in defiance of existing civil rights & appropriations laws. Why on earth would you expect them to comply with the stipulations of any deal?

Some small measure of cheer in a depressing week. But that's what life is like now: 1 step forward, 2 back. A human right should never have been up for debate anyway.

Are we supposed to believe Trump didn't incite the Jan 6th insurrection? The Congressional Jan 6th hearings record another story. So what was biased about the #Panorama edit?

What you’re witnessing is a populist assault on the BBC.

This is not an institutional scandal in any meaningful sense of the word. It is an attack on public service broadcasting.

The BBC is the latest part of ‘the public realm’ to feel the wrath of the right.

The playbook is wearyingly similar.

Underfund them. Hold them (piously) to the highest standards. Pillory them for all errors. And then co-opt, or neuter, them. 1/2

This is a depressing submission to authoritarianism. Why was it necessary to capitulate to Trump's bullying? It validates his hatred of the BBC and his fixation with the mote in another's eye.

I had my disagreements with the BBC under Tim Davie but he was a decent man doing a difficult job.

To see Trump's White House claiming credit for his downfall and attacking the BBC should worry us all.

Cornell, like other capitulators, shamefully justifies this by saying it preserves *our* independence. Even if that were true, it is pure moral cowardice to take the every-institution-for-itself approach when extortionist is rampaging through our academic community.

The neoliberal aversion to planning and just relying on the reactionary logic of the market means that the West, including the UK, totally unprepared for the future
I've been talking about this on here for a while. We just assume it will always rain enough, so the management of water in the UK is totally disastrous. Now, after a relatively few dry months, we are approaching a calamity. We have done it to ourselves. Yet again. We are a deeply unserious country.
