This is a play explicitly about how artists survive – or don't – under authoritarian regimes. I started working on it during 47's first run, when the threat began looming. I hoped the fears were unfounded. But here we are. I'm glad I get to tell this story though.
Born With Teeth | About the Play | Royal Shakespeare Company
Daniel Evans directs Ncuti Gatwa as Christopher Marlowe and Edward Bluemel as William Shakespeare in this thrilling imagining of the relationship between two literary icons at odds with their time.

This matters. Not because I think Trump is capable of mercy or empathy towards these vulnerable groups. But because it is a public act of defiance.

Contrast that with all these other powerful people in this country signaling nothing but appeasement and obedience.
Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde to Trump: "I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian, and transgender people in Democratic, Republican, and independent families, some who fear for their lives ... and the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals"

I feel this as a playwright.
would love to abolish the notion that making your audience feel joy is inherently intellectually and artistically inferior to making them feel pain, a cheap and cynical attitude which poisons everything from misogynist disdain for romance to why it’s harder for comedies to win Best Picture
I saw a review of the new season that said it wasn’t good because it was too into fan service and should have taken more risks to upset fans and I was like……you deeply do not understand this show and should not be reviewing it.

Weirdly, *every time* they do a “just give people enough resources to live” experiment it works to reduce misery and save governments money but they gotta keep studying it forever I guess.
They had similar results in 2014 with the 100,000 Homes Project, too: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/100%2C0...
Preliminary results from the Denver Basic Income Project that's providing cash to hundreds of unhoused people for one year using the first 6 months of data:

• NO ONE receiving $1,000/mo still sleeping outside
• Full-time employment increased
• Fewer visits to the ER
• Fewer nights spent in jail
