Happy 99th birthday to the man who gave voice to the wild. 🎉

Sir David Attenborough, thank you for a lifetime dedicated to the natural world, and for sharing its story with wisdom, wonder, and grace.

You've inspired generations to fall in love with nature.

What times we live in. Anyhow, here’s another time- Medieval America: Montezuma’s Castle’ in Camp Verde, Arizona. The defensible (and flood-proof) cliff dwelling was home to generations of ‘Sinagua’ people, from c.1050-1400. Pics 3 and 4 show a model. A marvel.

I lost my mum to suicide and my dad's death was in that grey area between intent and recklessness. I've also been fighting against it my whole life (and it has me on the ropes at the moment). That is TMI I know but I just want to express solidarity with anyone who finds this time of year a struggle
This holiday can be stressful and painful for many. If you are feeling overwhelmed this season, please contact a helpline. the world is better with you in it.

📢 New Episode 📢

The fifth episode of The Shropshire Witches Podcast is now live. In this episode, we explore the history and enduring legacy of The Workhouse. The human aspect of this episode made this difficult to record, but we believe it is so important.

Maybe I'm easily shocked (OK, so I am), but I can't get over how early 20th-c archivists wrote notes right onto medieval manuscripts: this is Westminster Abbey Muniments Bk 5; the hand here is the same as recorded a collation of the manuscript on the endpaper, dated 1915. #medievalsky #MedievalMSS

In 1695, the local officers of Whitby petitioned the county magistrates to stop the relief paid to William Guderick, claiming his lameness was cured and he could now provide for himself and his family.

This feels like a time to bring out my favourite fact, which is that there was a Nando's (coffeehouse) in early-18th-century London. Pope and Swift could go for a cheeky Nando's.

Not sure those outside the university sector in the UK know how bad things have gotten and how much worse they promise to get. So far no indication from the government that they have any interest in halting the collapse.
'Sector leaders expected more than 100 of the UK’s 140-odd universities to be making redundancies by the start of 2025, in what has been described as a “cataclysmic” situation where “everything is on the table”.'
University job cuts to ‘hit 10,000 by year end’ despite fee rise
English fee rise does little to relieve pressure on institutions, with increased staff costs likely to swallow additional funding
