Thomas Light was a conjurer who lived in the early 19th century at High Ercall. He consulted the stars, summoned spirits, and satisfied the needs of locals with both curses and cures. He was often heard wrestling with supernatural beings and even the Devil at night. 🌙

In St Mary's Church, Stottesdon, the medieval sedilia (stone niches where the clergy could sit during mass) are decorated with faces. The carving below is thought to depict the Devil.

One of the things that's most exciting about writing my book about The Devil in Shropshire is the complexity of these stories. He is more than a stock character. He is a powerful conduit for the fears and attitudes of a community. Through these tales, we connect to our past.

Church Preen Church is Norman in origin and was founded by Cluniac monks. Its ancient yew, dating to around 457 AD, was once described as being one of England's noblest. Yew trees symbolize death, rebirth, and protection. In Shropshire, they had healing properties and were guardians.

My brother Tom is a wonderful writer and shares his work on insta at @composition_ofwritings , but I just had to share his reflection on the aftermath of Samhain. It calls to mind the quiet landscape of our childhood and he envokes a world of ghostly companions and omens. I just love it!

Sometimes, the line between history and folklore blur, creating a story difficult to define. Other times, what we know in folklore hides something darker. This is the case with the tragedy of Polly Mayas.

The Parish Church of St. Peter Cound is wonderful for many reasons. It is home to this rather wonderful tub font, which is believed to be 12th century in origin. The font is tub-shaped and carved with rosettes and foliage. It is still used for Christenings.

There is such beauty in cemeteries. These places of rest are a window into the lives of those who came before us, the loves and losses that characterise our experiences. Cemeteries are important. They are space where history and folklore entwine. 🪦💚
