New paper out titled, The differential meaning of models: a framework for analyzing the structural consequences of semantic modeling decisions. Co-authored with Jim Deitrick. We try to say some things about semantic models in simple, precise terms. Read it here: arxiv.org/abs/2509.00248
The Differential Meaning of Models: A Framework for Analyzing the Structural Consequences of Semantic Modeling Decisions
The proliferation of methods for modeling of human meaning-making constitutes a powerful class of instruments for the analysis of complex semiotic systems. However, the field lacks a general theoretic...

NEW: A federal judge in Massachusetts grants a preliminary injunction blocking the Trump administration from deporting people to third countries without telling them where they're going and allowing them to raise fears of persecution or torture.

The opening lays out the stakes.

Happy Friday everyone. Thanks for reading NPR.org this week.

Wanted to take a second to also remind you: I interviewed whistleblower Dan Berulis to accompany my lengthy written story on NLRB. Hear from him in his own words:

To be clear, the narrative shift didn’t just happen, it required courage and action by courts, Senator Van Hollen, union leadership, protesters, reporters and, critically, Abrego Garcia’s wife. In the 1960s, civil rights leaders called it “dramatizing injustice.”

we now have election-style "race calls" on whether or not republicans have successfully invalidated enough legitimate votes validly cast by constituents to steal the office they lost
I've seen enough: Democratic Supreme Court Justice Allison Riggs has just won, provided NCSBE interpretation of NC Court of Appeals ruling holds. Math is no longer there for Griffin to overcome 734-vote deficit. Still need court confirmation before 100% calling. #ncpol

New must-read from @marisakabas.bsky.social:

“‘They can rally and protest all they want, but I'm not gonna be bullied […],’ Homan told the local news prior to Saturday’s rally. Meanwhile, Sackets Harbor 10th graders leave flowers on their jailed classmate’s desk in hopes of a safe return.”
New — I spoke to the school principal of Sackets Harbor, NY, where ICE handcuffed and disappeared a mother and 3 kids (including a 3rd grader). It’s also the town Trump Border Czar Tom Homan calls home.

Cook tells me about how the small town is taking on enormous power to bring the students home:
Try that in a small town
ICE disappeared a mother and 3 children. Neighbors of Trump's Border Czar said hell no.

Assigning Sen. Thurmond’s “longest filibuster” of the Civil Rights Act to the dustbin of history is a powerful part of the story.

Because no matter what, that’s where they’re all going, no matter how hard they fight it. Men who fight the future are the most foolish of all men.
Cory Booker will break the record for longest Senate floor speech at 7:19 PM EDT. Fewer than 2 hours from now. The record is held by Strom Thurmond, who was arguing for segregation. GO CORY, GO!

I feel helpless a lot lately, but one source of agency some of us have right now is where we choose to spend our money — and I haven’t gone to Target or Walmart since they eliminated DEI initiatives. Shop local where you can, shop more in line with your values for everything else. Money talks.

The Republicans’ superior storytelling skill is partly what got us into this mess, and storytelling alone won’t get us out, but it’s sure as hell a start. I appreciate what @booker.senate.gov is doing today and think his colleagues should take some notes.
People on here who are poo-pooing Booker underestimate the power of storytelling in politics.

This is such a common misapprehension even among the gentlest, most well-educated and well-meaning people — Christianity and Judaism are both religions the way Halo 3 and coloring are both forms of play
It is wild how many people - in the West and in the US in particular - do not understand what a religion is. So many critiques of "religion" are just critiques of Christianity, universalized.

To start - Judaism is not a religion you have to "believe in." There are no beliefs mandated by Jewish law.
Hey so uhh saying that people specifically shouldn't be Jewish is uhhh literal just antisemitism. Like, people are saying it's antisemitic *because it is*
