After watching KPop Demon Hunters (three times in a row, but we won't talk about that) I am reminded that South Korea kicked out a corrupt president, and maybe now I get why. It's an amazing allegory against the cults of personalities who control others through fear. #kpopdemonhunters #nomorekings

This is a fascinating thread about what Pope Leo really meant by his acceptance speech and all the history and why it's "shots fired" over the bow of not just the leadership of American Catholicism, but all who profess the American Heresy. My prayers to Pope Leo.

Pope Leo's first sermon and, uh, his using the phrase "be ever more fully a city set upon a hill" and cf'ing it to Rev 21:10 instead of any of the others before saying "many baptized Christians" are "living in a state of practical atheism" is. Well. Shots fired!

Read Pope Leo XIV's first homily as pope
During his homily, delivered in Italian, Leo XIV said that Christians must serve a world that is often hostile to their beliefs.

In the balance of faith and works, Francis's version of Catholicism was tilted far to the direction of works: feed the hungry, clothe the naked, make peace for the war-afflicted. ("Do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God".) Not just faith, but faith made manifest through works.

New Zealand was a great adventure. North and South Island tours in detail with giant forests of ancient trees, wild wildlife, penguins!!, glaciers, Haka, steam vents, beaches, fjords (overnight yacht stay was amazing with kayaking and swimming BRR), Antarctica staging, and Scottish Chinese Garden.

A Blue Jay for a friend. I accidentally used a blue water soluble ink (Quasar) instead of my usually Carbon Black for the sketching in before adding watercolor. The ink ran spectacularly with the watercolors, but watercolors are *never* under my control anyway. #art #watercolor #mistake

Reminder for today: The 50501 Movement has planned protests at all 50 state capitols and the U.S. Capitol on Presidents’ Day at noon. While mainstream media isn’t covering the event, many YouTubers have stepped up to provide coverage.

Good for them!
Times are bleak, it’s true. But people are still out here doing incredible work now, when it matters most.

Activists in KY bought land slated for a new prison, and will now fill it with native plants and use it as an intertribal gathering location.

Eastern KY activists bought land where feds wanted to build a prison
Rep. Hal Rogers has wanted another prison in eastern Kentucky for years. Local and national activists say the new land owners have better plans for Letcher County.

This is the way…

“The elected officials in Washington have to stop protesting in Washington. They have to go back to their districts…show the consequences…show the school that isn’t operating…they have to make it real.”

With social media, word will spread to neighboring districts—even red ones.

Letters went out to federal workers this morning stating they were fired due to poor performance. However, all employees had been rated as “exceptional” performers by their supervisors. Please keep these records and pursue wrongful termination claims. Let the lawsuits begin.

The #1 reported reason people avoid doctor’s appointments is because they’re afraid of finding out they have a serious illness.

If you have that fear, that’s normal and you’re not alone. Also remember, there is basically no serious illness that isn’t less serious if you catch it sooner.

We got a Costco membership for the first time in our lives today. They asked why & I said because treat your workers well, you value diversity, & you didn’t cave in to authoritarian demands. He said: “We’ve been getting lots of folks saying that, thanks for joining.”

As someone who started as a science communicator on Tiktok and gave up a few years ago (despite success) I can say I hate that platform as a creator.

It was so demoralizing.

I still don't want it to be banned though 🤷‍♀️
One thing the TikTok ban discourse has not included is that many TikTok creators privately do not like TikTok, which of course they’re not saying because none of us want it banned.

It’s a brutal creative ecosystem that extracts from creators until they burnout and then they are replaced.

And I have zero patience for people who are working out their own raw animal terror and rage by attempting to spread it to others.

You can feel those feelings - I do, all the time - but you’re a useless asshole if you spend your time trying to make others feel as hopeless as you do.
