In my view it is far worse than that. misogyny actively prevents people from developing an imaginative capacity in the first place and narrows the possibilities they see in the world.

Go with me here.
So much of what we're facing now with mainstream misogyny comes from the fact that many men see anything not cis, het, and white, as a threat to their existence & understanding of what it is to be a man.

If one never even sees women depicted as heroic, strong, clever, brave, it erodes imagination.

Here is my best guidance for action, rendered beautifully by the great John Lithgow. I first published these lessons more than eight years ago, in late 2016. They open the twenty chapters of "On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century."

The "Is it a constitutional crisis yet?!" discussion is so absurd: Of course you can construct increasingly esoteric definitions for why this current moment doesn't meet your exact criteria yet. But meanwhile, this is where we are: Masked agents of the states abducting people for writing op-eds.
Video of the international student at Tufts being arrested by "federal authorities" in Massachusetts has been released and it's terrifying.

They're not even uniformed officers. Just secret police thugs in hoodies and masks.

the silicon valley ai worshipping cult stuff is so incredibly strange i'm not even sure how to approach commenting on it
There is a quasi-religion in Silicon Valley that views AI as godlike. This faith has always been parallel to Evangelical Christianity: salvation (transhumanism), the rapture (the technological singularity), and demons (Roko's Basilisk)

Lately the AI faith has fully fused with Christian Nationalism.

The rhetoric of “replacement” is a red herring. The logic is actually additive and subtractive. California State University, e.g., isn’t “replacing” profs with AI; the state of California *slashed” the uni’s budget which will reduce the professoriate. AND they contracted for $16million with Open AI.

You're going to hear a lot of DC types going on the record to say they can't figure out why any of this is happening.

It's really quite straightforward: this is happening because MAGA is a eugenics project, this is eugenics.

I don't expect much. Lasting change comes from habitual practices we can incorporate into our every day.
I wonder whether todays buy nothing diffuse action will be the left equivalent to the entirely vibes-based “shoplifting” narrative from last year: a vibe, yes, but one that orients the narrative.

this is the effect of social media on social movements
Celebrities are pushing Blackout Friday, telling people not to shop at places like Target or Amazon. But it's unclear what Blackout Friday actually stands for – and its creator is a "Mindfulness Coach" who wants to abolish income taxes and the federal government.

We also pay taxes. And so do indie bookshops.

Why I get tf away from ppl that are always "just kidding" and live like there "ain't no rules" about it.
The notion that Trump's "I'm king" tweet is "just trolling" or "a joke" presents an opportunity to recreate my just-joking thread (porting it over from the Bad Place):

1. I wrote my PhD dissertation on the social function of humor (in literature & film) and here's the thing about "just joking."

You don't get to experience all the little riffs of language, the way you glimpse other worlds, other people, other minds through books.

Send this to people who claim AI isn't taking artists' jobs.

There is no amount of 'adapting' that will spontaneously generate more work if companies decide they don't want to pay you anymore.
