Unbound hit a red flag with me when I found out they donated to Matt Hancock’s run for Conservative Party Leader.
Hearing what they, or Boundless, have done to @dan.nerdcubed.co.uk; and how @mattophobia.ie lost his job… they’re truly evil people. So many lives potentially derailed.

It seems Unbound / Boundless are saying, in statements to BBC Radio 4, essentially "Authors, if you rock the boat by speaking up you'll hurt the company and make it harder for us to pay you".

To which I respond - Was there any remaining hope you were going to pay us?

Thing is, it feels on Bluesky like EVERYONE knows about this Unbound scandal now. But they don't. In the grand scheme of things - the grand scheme of UK book lovers, even - what this publisher has done to its authors is still relatively little-known. Coverage like this is an important step.
I was invited onto BBC Radio 4's You And Yours today to talk about Unbound, who owe me and their other authors around £650,000 in total, which is not even taking into account the readers they have refused to refund. You can listen to it here (begins around 19 mins in): www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

UNBOUND AUTHORS: I’m speaking to a solicitor about our fine mess. If you have ANY correspondence with the company (beyond the “Dear Author” letters we all got) in 2024 about nonpayment or about the company’s financial stability, could I see it? I’m opening my DMs for this (don’t make me regret that)

I discovered yesterday, in a mass email sent at 3am, that I will not be receiving the roughly £40,000 that my publisher Unbound/Boundless owes me for pre-order sales of The Paradox Paradox. The payment for five years of work, gone.

Oh wait, no: got a lengthy, whiny e-mail at 3am explaining that this poor widdle company can't pay us authors what we're owed like it said it would because it still isn't financially viable and btw the selfless executives have all been heroically working unpaid so please don't be mean uwu.
Just wanted to update this because I think it's important to report honestly on the demise of Unbound: I have been told by Boundless I will be paid what I'm owed over a number of installments in the coming months. Which is probably the most transparency I've had since day one tbh.
Yeah, I'm owed something from a translated version of the Small Robots book for Taiwan, of all places. No idea how or even if it was selling, but I had some correspondence with the very kind and enthusiastic translator and there was a (modest) advance involved. I assume I won't see that now.

They owe me about £75,000 and never made a single one of their scheduled repayments.

My US books are all a sublicense of my Unbound deal, so all US royalties went to them, for them to take a cut and then deliver the rest to me. They collected 18 months from Penguin Random House and gave me $0.

So, I think it's time I begin, in detailed specifics, talking about the mess that is Unbound / Boundless as a book publisher, in essence stealing most of a years royalties from me and many other authors, as a result of poor financial decisions, and legal BS.

Please read and share this thread.

Gonna burn some bridges and talk about Unbound, since it's unlikely that they'll sue me at this point. They seem to have spent money that was supposed to go towards royalty payments, expecting money to come in, which then didn't bsky.app/profile/laur...

The TLDR as I understand - the company expected an incoming investment for a magazine project, took money out the author royalties account to pre spend the investment, the investment fell through, author money can't be repaid by investment.

That's my good faith understanding of those events.
