Hi Everyone. Great to see you all here! I write fiction and non-fiction. My most recent book is This Way to Departures, a collection of stories. Some of my non-fiction is in @thenation.com. Here's an interview I did with Kristen Renwick Monroe on who goes fascist.

Important new report.

This also holds for immigration, which is why a strategy to fight only far-right PARTIES, rather than more broadly far-right POLICIES (irrespective of who advances them), is addressing only part of the problem.
The main finding is that the increased far right presence in the EP is starting to impact policy. But it's happening primarily through influencing the mainstream, that is, the EPP. For more, read the paper here: www.cer.eu/insights/far...
The far right’s impact on the EU’s climate agenda
The far right is stronger than ever in the European Parliament. And climate policy has become a testing ground for its influence.

The BBC is bloody brilliant. It's central to the fact that British democracy isn't circling the drain like it is in America, it preserves a common culture, and propagates respect for facts. We should defend it as firmly as we fight corruption, because it's a crucial part of integrity in public life.

It's getting time for end of year lists.

To my writer pals: we all love and admire and want to support our friends. A lovely thing to do. But when we talk about inclusion, representation in publishing this is also a chance to look wider to the great but overlooked writing around the world.

NEW: The US Army website for its bases in Bavaria, Germany told its soldiers and employees that it might need to obtain free food from the German government during the US government shutdown.

The Army later altered publication to remove a list of food banks, but we have the original text here:
US Army Tells Soldiers to Go to German Food Bank, Then Deletes It
The initial 'Shutdown Guidance' for the US Army Garrison Bavaria included instructions to go to German food banks.

No more Black or trans staffers. No politics of any kind. The cowardice of mainstream media isn't just insulting, it's *boring.* Now TV is just like any other beauty rag. Why not just kill it quickly? Why the slow-motion pretense?
thank you for all the support; the statement from our union is now live here with some more reporting.

now that this is public I can confirm that the majority of today’s layoffs were women of color. there are no longer any Black women working at Teen Vogue.

Journalists, politicians, pundits, please read! 👇
There are three things everyone should know about youth and far-right voting:

1: There is (averaged all European countries) no correlation between being young and voting for the far right.
@ipsosnl.bsky.social published an age breakdown of the results of the election polls regarding tomorrow's Dutch elections.

Young Dutch voters are leaning more towards the centre-left (D66, PvdA-GL, PvdD, Volt), and are less likely to vote for both the far-right and the center-right.
