Roman bronze dragon’s head standard, AD 190-260.

Originally mounted on a pole, with a long fabric tube attached to the back of the head. When charging on horseback, the wind inflated the tube and the dragon shrieked!

In Hookland, many a folkloric tale starts not with ‘A long time ago’ or ‘Far, far away’, but with the line: ‘Out across the dark moor where strange songs are still heard …’ For folklore tells strongly of place and our relationships to it. – Dr. M. Benn #Folklore #FolkloreThursday

This week I made a visit to fairyland (actually it is Huelgoat in Brittany, a place famous for its strange rock formations and wild forest).

A #Roman glass bottle, in blue, white, & green glass with gold gilt decoration. It was probably once used to hold perfume or perfumed oil, about 1800-2000 years ago.

An absolutely beautiful early 20thC angel on the rail leading to the pulpit at St Peter's, Leicester.
Apparently carved by a local man, the quality is superb.

The 24 hour clock at St Mary's, Raunds is the earliest I've ever seen. Dating from the early 15thC, two angels with delicately feathered wings support it flanked by the kneeling donors.

Still piecing together dates for The Buildings Archaeologist book tour in July-December 2026.

Despite some great shows in 2024-25, I have not a single solid offer from any events organisers in the north of England or Scotland.

There must be someone out there, surely?
