Loss of respect for rule of law can be traced right to the Supreme Court, which has made bizarre decisions, like the one saying that President is above the rule of law. dianeravitch.net/2025/05/14/c...
Chief Justice Roberts Blames “Lack of Civics Education” for Breakdown in Respect for Law
If this weren’t so pathetic, it would be funny. Chief Justice John Roberts spoke at the Georgetown University Law School about the loss of respect for the rule of law. Did he point his finger…

Here is a blockbuster Q! If our job is to best educate all of our children, how do we do that without employing some form of Diversity, Equity, and inclusion which has now been outlawed in education? Shouldn't that as a process be standardized in some way? #EdChat #

Those are interesting questions. I don’t think having standards technically diminishes the professionalism of teaching. I do think that a hyper focus on standards removes teacher autonomy and prevents teachers from using their pedagogical expertise. #EdChat #EduSky

The problem with education is that people in charge are more interested in efficiency than actual learning … deep learning and memory building is not very efficient #edchat #edusky

It's a good question. Students aren't one size fits all or programmed to the same-sex schedule - I think using global averages to determine this is silly - we need a new paradigm (shoot me plz) for how to bridge kids to standards. Closer to individual, much more flexible. #edchat
So when there is criticism that students aren't meeting standards, who's at fault? The standards are able to be changed. Brain science and current teaching climates cannot. #edchat

Some content areas are so mired by standards that the class is more of a script that repeats itself year after year leaving little wiggle room for the teacher to add much meat. #edchat

There are plenty of studies showing that the current emphasis on standardized
testing is not an accurate measure of cognitive growth and does not provide equal opportunities for all students to succeed. #EdChat #EduSky

I think there should be some guidelines for all public schools to follow … sequencing of classes … I also think any school collecting state/fed funding should also follow the same guidelines. #edchat

Adrian, thanks for your important point. Do standards actually take the professionalism out of teaching? Have standards been created to "block" teachers from individualizing teaching to meet the needs of their specific students? #edchat
Having standards to teach isn’t the problem. I don’t mind being told what I’m to teach in a certain grade level. It becomes a problem when the standards are drilled down to discrete skills and teaching becomes standardized. This is why there has been little growth in test scores. #EdChat #EduSky

Sigh. Nat'l floor? Nat'l cornucopia? Anything without local/classroom flexibility should be a nonstarter, but students and parents deserve some expectations that are built out of the collective wisdom. As a history teacher, we really need to look at English, imo, & stop the laundry lists. #edchat

Let's remember that first-rate educational standards at the national or state level do not guarantee student success. Standards are only one part of the teaching and learning process. #edchat @edusky.bsky.social

What can we learn from the history of the standards movement? For example, initially politicians supported standards, then backed off when the standards were closely aligned with high stakes state tests? Do standards narrow the curriculum, or open the curriculum? #edchat
