The thing about Mamdani is that he’s a talented politician but not otherworldly or one in a billion, he’s just a competent guy with popular ideas who ran against an entitled piece of shit and to me it’s a lot more optimistic to imagine 1000 campaigns like his than to view him as a unique phenomenon

If you think of Patrick Bateman from American Psycho as "America/neoliberalism personified", then the ending has a much grimmer interpretation than "he imagined it all": that he committed all these atrocities but the rest of world simply chose to turn a blind eye or covered it up for him. #booksky

I’ve been writing an essay that includes a discussion of the obsession that Israeli settlers have with destroying olive trees. By coincidence I found a video from 3 days ago of them doing that again.

A friend of mine studying PhD in a prestigious US university said they've lost four students this year, and 3 students plus 2 professors at another, majority of which said to be suicides. Very revealing of our times.

A month into the ceasefire in Gaza, almost nothing has changed for Manar Jendiya.

Originally from Gaza City, the Palestinian mother has remained displaced in Deir al-Balah since the truce took effect on 11 October, as most of her neighbourhood, Shujaiya, remains under Israeli control.

Two weeks into the agreement, Israeli forces heavily bombed the area where she was staying, forcing her to seek refuge elsewhere.

One of the attacks killed her sister.

“Her husband was killed earlier in the war, so she had been caring for her children alone,” Jendiya told Middle East Eye.

“When the attacks in Gaza City escalated and evacuation orders were issued repeatedly, she didn’t want to risk losing her children as well, so she sought refuge in a makeshift tent in central Gaza,” she added.

“She never imagined she would be killed here too, leaving her children without a mother or father.”

‘It will never be forgiven’: UN climate chief warns world to act or face disaster
Faltering governments will be blamed for famine and conflict abroad, and face stagnation and inflation at home, says climate chief at start of Cop30
Governments failing to shift to a low-carbon economy will be blamed for famine and conflict abroad, and will face stagnation and rising inflation at home, the UN’s climate chief warned on Monday at the start of the Cop30 climate talks.
Simon Stiell, the executive secretary of the UN framework convention on climate change, addressed the gathering of ministers and high-ranking officials from nearly 200 countries, in a stark portrayal of the price of failure on the climate crisis. Continue reading...
