A story I found about Haiti:

In 1999, a group of Haitians were tired of political disorder and dreamed of a better life in the United States. So they built a small, 23-foot boat by hand using pine trees, scrap wood, and used nails. They called the boat "Believe in God."

Add to this that HSI just filed a declaration in our case challenging these policies saying they can’t trust REAL IDs as proof of status.

So showing your papers isn’t even enough to end the stop.

Something I noticed this weekend was that at the Farmers of Color Conference I went to in Ames, Iowa, only one politician was there, Republican Mike Naig. Down the street was the Farmers Union Conference where Democratic reps were legion. Just an observation from Middle America.

this whole story is a banger and this part in particular is something I often think about living in a small Pennsylvania town in which a struggling liberal arts college is one of the major employers

okay so the second and arguably even funnier part of this story is: so my dad was a university president, right? And there’s another university in that town. heated sports rivals, etc, etc, you know how it is
One time the local Staples (office supply store) went out of business and had a liquidation sale and my sister’s boyfriend and a couple of his friends went and bought about a thousand boxes of post it notes for 10 bucks total and six months later they did this to my dads office

So love wobbegongs. Everything is good about the wobbegong. Its name. Its flattened Oscar the Grouch face. Its frondy bits. Its lazy life as a hungry rug. And it’s a shark. Outstanding animal 10/10
The Tasselled Wobbegong is a master of disguise that can eat a fish almost as big as itself in one gulp. It's classified as a shark, but when it lays on the sea floor it looks like a harmless rug if you manage to see it. But with powerful jaws and sharp teeth they are no fish to mess with.

One of the best-sketched characters in an incredibly character-rich show: a fascist whose (potentially real!) redeeming qualities are continually undercut by his monumental pride, bigotry, entitlement and pettiness
The most realistic scene in DS9 is when Gul Dukat whined about how the Bajorans never erected a statue in his honor. A prophetic text.

My crazy sister has always hated my SIL. Christmas 2 years ago, SIL served filet mignon and had steak knives at each table setting. My sister freaked out that the steak knives were hers and that SIL stole them! She went around the table (we were still eating) and took all of our knives and then left

You: "I want you to tell me the most compellingly, tragically weird guy to ever be president of the US."

Me, a day later: "Okay. I've narrowed it down to five."

You: "All right. I'll make it easier. How about just between 1960 and 1980?"

Me, a week later: "Okay. I've narrowed it down to four."
I think Nixon was the most "tragic Shakespearean character" we've ever had as POTUS.

He was extremely smart and talented, and also immensely flawed. He had the actual capacity to be one of the truly great leaders of the last 100 years, but never outran his personal demons.
And if that blew your mind, read up on the Family Assistance Plan, the proposal from Milton Friedman (!) that Nixon embraced -- would've been essentially a negative income tax for the poor in which they'd get cash payments.
