For the first time in my career, I can’t tell people to trust what the CDC website says. And that is an incredibly sad and devastating place for this country to be.
CDC has overhauled its website to assert that “the claim ‘vaccines do not cause autism’ is not an evidence-based claim”

A lot of people think that every international student admitted means one fewer spot for domestic students, when the opposite is more likely true - the tuition revenue international students bring allows public universities to provide substantial discounts to domestic students, improving access.

These kinds of findings are why I don't understand "fiscal conservatism." It IS good economic policy to spend money to prevent problems, which are more expensive to solve.
Unless what you actually want is no government spending on human welfare at all.
A program in Flint, MI, gave $1,500 to any/all pregnant people and $500/month for the first year of their infant’s life.

Among the benefits, those babies experienced lower rates of prematurity and low birth weight, which resulted in fewer NICU admissions, saving the city of Flint $6.2 million/year.

They recovered over 180 bullet shells at the CDC. Debris from shattered glass is still being cleaned up. I am completely stunned at how quickly the news cycle has moved on. This was an act of terrorism targeting public health experts, and the response seems to be a collective shrug.

this is getting almost no coverage from big newspapers. this chilling update is invisible on the homepages of the NYT and WaPo. A clear attack on science, aggravated by an anti-science WH and its officials.

I get that he wasn't rude to a GOP official at a restaurant, but where is the outrage?

I remember hearing the words "brought to you by the corporation for public broadcasting" every time I watched Sesame Street as a kid. Horrifying that this tiny pot of funds for educational media and public information is being stolen from us. www.npr.org/2025/08/01/n...

There's a lot of talk about medicaid in the big awful bill but hardly anyone talking about how it will turn ICE into the largest law enforcement agency in the country and world's largest jailer. This is the equivalent of the enabling acts and will be the start of an ethnic cleansing campaign.

He wants the spectacle of signing the bill on Independence Day. And I'd bet that, given today's Senate vote, his team is full steam ahead on photo op plans.

If a bill is so bad that you have to exempt entire states from its consequences to win the votes you need—just don't pass the bill!

Why do people in Washington state deserve Medicaid & SNAP cuts, but others don't?

This is plain wrong, and it's just no way to legislate.

It might not seem like a big deal to let parents opt kids out of LGBTQ books. But opt-outs put a HUGE burden on educators to provide advance notice of every book. To avoid that burden, educators may simply avoid LGBTQ books. Effectively eliminating them from schools.

Republicans tried to effectively ban insurers from covering abortion care in their Big Ugly bill.

This would've been catastrophic, even in states like mine where abortion is legal.

But Democrats fought and WON, stripping out this provision. It's not over. We'll keep fighting.

Just a reminder that Orwell’s protagonist in 1984, Winston Groom, works as a copy editor, except that his job entails endlessly “correcting the data” so that the archival record conforms to the Party’s preferred fictions, and what is “known” becomes a principal instrument of conformity.
