I’m a science writer. That’s the moon, not the sun, in my profile pic. How cool does it look?!?

My views are my own and do not represent anyone else’s.
Hey, anyone know a culinary historian? I’m wondering what people who relied on chicken eggs used for baking when chickens went into their low-light, no-eggs period in winter. Did they use a method of preservation like water-glassing? Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

The HIFLD data portal (home to countless valuable geospatial datasets) has been shut down, but these guys have archived the whole thing and made layers available in a web viewer or GIS web service: www.seer.ai/the-open-pla...

Hey @npr.org, loved Buffy Gorilla’s story on cheesesteaks. Made me want one, but I don’t think there are any cheesesteaks in my vicinity these days (not even a creative take). One can dream… www.npr.org/2025/07/05/n...

Black Birders Week starts today!
Our #BlackBirdersWeek Theme is HERE!

Black Birders Week is a bold and unapologetic reclamation of the Black community’s role in environmental spaces—a powerful celebration of our enduring connection to the earth and a resounding call to dismantle the oppressive systems that have excluded us. ⬇️

Black Birders Week 2025 is May 25-31. The bird theme is "the Sparrow family" -- birds that are often overlooked, just like Black birders have historically been underrepresented in environmental and naturalist spaces.

Great story about this fascinating research! Thanks, @vermontpublic.org!
Pulling carbon out of the atmosphere at an increasingly rapid rate is a critical tool for avoiding the worst impacts of climate change, alongside reducing climate-warming emissions from burning fossil fuels.
Dead trees in streams keep a surprising amount of carbon out of the atmosphere
A new study from the University of Vermont takes the first-ever look at how much carbon is stored in wood in streams across the Northeast.
