If you're not aware of the levels of punishment now flooding our secondary schools (since academisation), read this. It is scaring a generation of children. 472 kids have had to leave this school in three years - but it's not just this school.

Today we awarded Professor @davidolusoga.bsky.social OBE an honorary degree for his outstanding work as a social historian.

As someone who grew up in Tyneside we asked David what he misses most about living here, as well as his words of advice for the graduating class of 2025.

RIP Jimmy Carter. Here he is in 1977, receiving the freedom of the City of Newcastle - complete with cheering crowds and a spirited attempt by Carter at "Howay the Lads".

Another excellent evaluation of the Sure Start programme, this time on its effects on youth offending. Once again it shows that investment in early years, preventative services improves life chances, reduces the costs of social failure and delivers major benefits.
NEW: Sure Start, the national programme which provided universal, holistic support during the early years, significantly reduced serious youth crime.

Phonological awareness is hugely important for speech, vocabulary, reading and spelling. All children should have robust syllable and phoneme level skills before they start phonics learning. Free assessment, intervention, stimulus pictures here research.ncl.ac.uk/phonological...
