Life is a mystery
Everyone must stand alone
I hear you call my name
And it feels like home
When you call my name, it's like a little prayer
I'm down on my knees, I wanna take you there

You never met a bigger critic than Bret Stephens of “safe spaces” and “trigger warnings” nor a bigger proponent of courageously engaging in argumentation and embracing discomfort.

Until someone advocates for Palestinian human rights. Then he shrivels up into a whimpering, tearful, quaking mess.

For those of you keeping score, 18-22 year-old students calling for an end to slaughter in Gaza are so racist they need to be expelled or deported, but 24-35 year-olds celebrating Hitler, rape, and, um, racism are just kids being kids so chill.

Also, racism is over so no need for Voting Right Act.

New from me at Cato: I go through the numerous and massive First Amendment and academic-freedom violations of Trump's proffered "compact" with universities and then talk about the mechanism by which it would be enforced, by way of what I describe as a "retroactive push-button guillotine."
Universities Must Defend Their Independence by Rejecting Trump's "Compact"
The Trump administration has proffered a “compact” to universities that would require them to surrender their independence and academic freedom. How many First Amendment violations can we identify in ...

Muslims are also 1% of the population. So are Hindus and Buddhists. Jews are 2%. Shall we also compromise about equal rights for each of them?

How big must a minority be to deserve truly equal rights, versus a "nuanced" form of second-class citizenship?

One of the things we <actually> teach students at universities is that you need to support your arguments with data & evidence. When you don’t, or when you lie, your “arguments” are not taken seriously. Maybe that’s what these folks don’t like about universities. The marketplace of ideas is tough 🤷‍♂️
Don't. Print. Lies. In. The. Newspapers.

This is just a slightly politer version of the lies Robin Vos spreads about UW all the time (bsky.app/profile/mcop...). It's ugly. It's not true. Nor are the grants lies true. Frankly, it's all obscene given the authoritarian assault now on 🇺🇸 higher ed.

We're about to see who is really committed to freedom of expression, regardless of whether they agree. We're about to see whether constitutionalism is a stronger ethos than partisan preference.

Even a year ago, I wouldn't have been so uncertain what we'd learn.
