Like...did they not understand that killing a terminally ill person trying to survive long enough to find a cure is not the same thing as assisted suicide? And that killing a terminally ill person against their will is still just straight up murder??? Because you don't have their consent??? Hello???

Keep in mind that I already know that a big UBI voice has advocated significantly reducing actual people's actual already-inadequate SSI were UBI to be implemented.
I keep thinking about this comment about it making sense to cut back SSI if people are getting UBI.

But SSI is already far below what people actually need to get by. Even with UBI of $2200/mo, that's still far below what is needed monthly to get by in Indiana ($4155).

Another thing—I was recently at a dinner with educators and authors put on by my publisher to talk about our books, but instead we all talked about (and ironed out) the ways this tech is adversely impacting classrooms and what to do about it. It leaves no room for much else.

I read the book almost 30 years ago. If I remember right, he decides to remain nameless in the text, but he's been given a name in multiple unofficial sequels and things. Dean Koontz had him choose the name Deucalion, frex (son of Prometheus).

Agreed. A lot of the debates about the Creature are at least dipping some oblivious toes in the pools of ableism and...maybe not queerphobia, per se, but...I dunno. There's just this weird feeling, like you said. Like what people are saying isn't quite right somehow.

Agreed and also, as a trans person, I gotta say. Choosing a name SO OFTEN only underlines your "otherness" in the eyes of society. The whole debate feels so... something, to my queer self, but I can't put my finger on it. Just that it feels not great.

I guess my point is: giving him a name or not giving him one are equally acceptable fic choices, both have similar implications grounded in real-world disability struggles, nobody is crapping on Shelley by doing either thing, humans tend to name EVERYTHING, just let people have fun, goddamn.

Someone said him having a name makes him less of a Creature and all I can think of is how all the monsters I grew up with had names & were still Other.

The Creature does not NEED a name to be a person. He starts off the story AS a person. But a name doesn't erase his Otherness.

If people who love the Creature want to imagine a different ending for him then what'sin the book, where he gets to be happy and do some more self-discovery and make a good life for himself where he's not alone, that's not "shitting on Mary Shelley's legacy" or whatever. Yikes.

This is like Van Halen's 'No brown M&Ms' stipulation in their rider where they knew they had to re-check all the important stuff if the brown M&Ms bit wasn't followed.

If they're willing to cut a corner for NPC dialogue because they think it's unimportant, where else did they cut corners?
