Do you believe in the paranormal? asked my littlest, on a walk. I told him sometimes animals seemed to be channeling someone. He jumped back, startled. I looked up at this guy, looking down, close enough to touch.

Soviet TV showed “Swan Lake” on loop during political turmoil—what would be the American version of TV to lull people into thinking everything is fine? “Home Alone”? A “Friends”
marathon?

Re Zelensky at the WH, yet again, feminists and trauma/abuse- informed thinkers are years ahead of political analysts.

There is no acceptable affect, no way to charm an abuser, and no “deal” other than playing very very dead that would change how Trump and his flying monkey Vance behaved.

The number of US friends who’ve switched to using Signal the last few weeks reminds me of the noticeable shift to Signal among Hong Kongers I knew during the 2019 protests. Not an encouraging data point.

So clear that for both of them their core childhood emotional experience was humiliation. I am genuinely sorry their dads hurt them so much. They’re hobbled little men in no position to wield this power given their disability.

Vance treating Zelenskyy like a child who forgot to say thanks is one of his most disgusting displays yet. Continuing the work of diplomatic destruction he began in Munich

The bravery of this man is incredible. When our own institutional leaders are caving to Trump (and sniveling JD), Zelenskyy stands up for his people and for what is right.
ZELENSKYY: Putin broke the ceasefire. What kind of diplomacy, JD, are you speaking about?

VANCE: I think it's disrespectful to come into the Oval Office and try to litigate this in front of the American media

I am humiliated and horrified listening to them berate Zelensky. The shame of these stupid, venal, monstrous, ignorant men who are our “leaders.” I wish they would die.

Philanthropy should never be a substitute for public services, but this is where we are. Kudos to the Macarthur Foundation for this move.

The rest of philanthropy needs to step up. Now. As @nonprofitaf.bsky.social says, "Dear funders: your endowments will be worthless in a fascist state."

With Francis on the threshold, I'd like to encourage you all to read his breathtaking encyclical on our obligations to the earth, our Mother, our home. Laudito Si is one of the great environmental works of our time. (For the secular, just replace "God" with "Gaia.") www.vatican.va/content/fran...

Listened to the Yarvin NYT interview and—he cannot make a single coherent argument. This is considered a guru? Aside from a total absence of moral imagination, he argues like a boy with a flashlight. What he sees is The Thing That Is!!! Look here! I’ve found it! And again!

Also, he hates women.

I found this very useful. Offers a return to curiosity and thus hope, rather than just shrinking in horrified sorrow and hate.

Met a mom at a party who told me she longed to rebuild her career. I sympathized and she quickly added, “But I’m not a feminist.”

You don’t believe women are equal to men? I asked.

She looked at her husband, watching intently. “I guess I do. But I am very Catholic,” she said. His eyes sharp.

In the Uber from the station and the nine-year-old, looking at Christmas lights, is asking how long Jesus was alive and why again he had to die and the driver, eyes on us in his mirror, interrupts to say, What if I told you this was heaven, but people insist on making it hell?

One doesn’t have to be an ACOA to find exceptional clarity in this. It’s a map of a kind of hell, and if it resembles yours, it will make you feel for a moment not alone.
