still figuring out my new normal.
My "regularly watched Fox until they started feeling complicit, now mostly ignore the news" parents-in-law still watch 60 Minutes. They might have *believed* it from 60 Minutes, or at least looked a little deeper into it.
This is why Weiss’s “it didn’t move the ball forward” excuse is bullshit. Yes, much of this was reported in the NYT and by Frontline.

But 60 Minutes averages 8 million viewers. It would have reached a massive audience that Frontline and the NYT didn’t.
Just watched the 60 Minutes segment. Basically it debunks the fundamental claim used by Trump admin that the detainees it sent there are “terrorists” and corroborates torture using clips from El Salvadorean influencers Bukele uses internally. Would be a shock to low information voters, probably

In a just world there would be a name instead of ‘off-duty Norfolk police officer’ and the thumbnail for the story would include a photo of that cop’s face for sharing around social media, you know kind of like story thumbnails with mugshots of people who didn’t fucking do anything wrong

I simply don't believe that this deep into a fucking pandemic, you don't know what an asymptomatic carrier is. Keep your fucking "we'll stay in the other room!" security theater.

The certainty of transmission is the main thing keeping my thumbs out of your eyeballs.

I don't want to be surrounded by people who share my opinions. I want to be surrounded by people who share my values.

See, it's entirely possible to believe in something and fail to live up to it. And one thing I appreciate, both On Here and irl, is those people who will kindly and firmly check me.

I keep getting whiffs of my middle school friend's house. I think it's a stress thing: it was not a happy house.

Sometimes I get so mad at someone that I can smell their spit, even in rooms they've been in, so I'm *pretty* sure it's not real. Gotta unpack why it's that smell *now*, though.

Again a big part of socialization in the US and elsewhere is a bedrock belief that Black people making *any* demands on your time, attention, resources, behavior or principles is an unfair imposition and should be handled as such whenever possible.

Also a podcast, if you have more time to listen than read (that's me)! Search for "ProPublica Narrated".

Coproduced by Theater of War, who I would tag but none of them seem to be here!

This is one of those things I can't unsee.

I won't put trauma all over the timeline, but I will say that many of our students come to us expecting to be mistreated in a thousand tiny ways.

Part of being a good person is looking for the racism society put in your heart & killing it.
One of the ways your racism is manifesting as a white person that you probably don't notice is that you have horrible manners with Black people. You have a terrible attitude when you meet real Black people. You don't say excuse me & can barely look them in the eye. That's over 80% of white people.

i dont want to live in a world that values gambling apps and ai i want to live in a world that celebrates mustard and puppets
This commercial for French's Mustard from 1987 is equal parts charming and also kinda unsettling, but what strikes me is the work that went into the absolutely delightful puppetry and practical effects for a *mustard commercial*!! Imagine that today??

Kids aren't, you know, any different than they ever have been. We're still the same species. Any behaviors manifested by children are a reaction to facts on the ground, to reality. Because they see it for what it is, not what it used to be, not what we pretend it still is.

Remaining politically unbiased requires staying neutral on matters like evidence, relevant past behavior, clear patterns, obvious lies, and observable truth, which is worth remembering whenever somebody starts complaining about political bias.

I wouldn’t decrease vocational training per se, but I think we have to bring back the idea that education’s mission is not just to prepare people for jobs but to prepare them for citizenship
Yeah that's why I think Dem policy should focus specifically on expanding the demographics which are most likely to be Dem supporting.

Public education, free CC, subsidies for state 4y degrees, *decreasing* vocational education (or making it meet standard college reqs), enact more loan forgiveness.

clippy voice: sounds like you espouse eugenics, yet anyone can become disabled at any time, & most eventually will—especially if this mass-disabling event (SARS-CoV-2 et al.) keeps rolling unabated.

want some help figuring out why it's a bad idea to tie human beings' worth to their health status?
“I don’t want MY taxes supporting disabled people! Let them fend for themselves!”

Many can’t. They can’t work, they can’t get out of bed, they’re completely dependent on caregivers for survival.

Are you saying it’s ok to let them die? Rather than provide social supports?
