Even after living here for seven years, it’s still jarring to hear a native Minnesotan say the word ‘bag’

The verse/bridge in Uptown Girl where the intro vocals come back is one of my favorite moments in pop music.

How long do you keep your high school yearbooks? It seems weird getting rid of them. But I never really look at them anymore.

Can anyone identify this #melody? It's from Frank Converse's Analytical #Banjo Method from 1886. He had a bad habit of not always including the original composers' names with his banjo arrangements.

Add Blood, Sweat, & Tears to that list.
When you write the band name “Earth, Wind & Fire”— do you include the Oxford comma, or not?

Questions like this one keep me up late at night. 🤔😫

While doing research for my next banjo book, I came across these ads from 1894. Musical cats! Those were the days.

#LetsDoIt25 - pop singles before 1954

1951 - Jackie Brenston & His Delta Cats - Rocket 88

12 POINTS!

This was the moment that jump blues made the leap to rock ’n roll. Ike Turner on piano, Jackie Brenston on vocals, Willie Kizart on guitar, Willie Simms on drums, and Raymond Hill on sax.

47. The Dominoes - Sixty Minute Man (Federal ‘51)

11 POINTS

Man entices potential suitor with promises of duration, stamina. That's Bill Brown singing lead, Clyde McPhatter on ecstatic shrieks, and pianist Billy Ward calling the shots and stiffing his singers.

1945 - Louis Jordan & His Tympany Five - Caldonia

When he was a teenager in the mid to late 40s, Little Richard was known to perform covers of this song despite his parents calling it “devil music."

1937 - Count Basie & His Orchestra - One O’Clock Jump

A simple, straightforward 12-bar blues, solid groove, and catchy riffs. Count and his band trade solos like kids tossing a ball around at recess. Three minutes of the most joyful jazz sounds.

In addition to a blues guitar masterclass, we also get questionable geography and solid arithmetic from Mr. Johnson.

Harold Arlen was one of the greatest melodists of the 20th century. Ethel Waters was the first to sing this song and I’m not sure of anyone who has done it better.

1931 - The Mills Brothers - Tiger Rag

The original label of the 78 had the following disclaimer: “No musical instruments or mechanical devices used in this recording other than one guitar.” I believe it’s a tenor guitar. Convincing mouth trumpet solo.
