the truth is that i probably wouldn’t have a relationship with anyone on my bio father’s side of my family tree without the independent verification of familial connection i got through ancestry dot com. again, this sucks. but so, in too many ways, does the world we live in.
i feel duty-bound as ever to point out that those who are the victims of another colonialist practice—plenary adoption—often have no other way to discover their genuine ancestry than by resorting to these databases. it shouldn’t be this way, but it is. 🥚
ya'll, please remember DNA kits/genealogy are white supremacist colonial tools. do you really think they're going to stop at AI? when they have the data set and full permission to use your genes, your body, your DNA?

Please use genealogy kits with CAUTION. It's a serious choice.

Individual experiences don't matter when they occur within racist and oppressive systems.

If the system is harmful, it shouldn't exist.

#adoption 🥚
the standard pro-#adoption propaganda tactic, which we saw all over social media this month, is to highlight adoptees who share “good adoption experiences.” But the issue, as with all injustices, isn’t whether the practice permits “good experiences,” but what other kinds of experiences it permits.

Plenary adoption, as practiced in the western world, involves the "good experiences" of misogyny, racism, classism, and xian supremacy. 😲

“openness” isn’t really a “kind” of adoption. it is an arrangement between adopters and original parents—which the former are generally free to break off with no legal consequences whatever.

adoption itself is as hermetically sealed a form of legal identity erasure as it ever was.

i want people to understand that “open” #adoption does not mean an end to the erasure of identity that makes secrecy possible. almost without exception, finalization of an adoption still results in the issuance of a new or “amended” birth certificate in which the natal parents’ names are replaced. +

Yep. Open adoption is not really for the adopted person. It doesn’t maintain our rights. It’s also rarely enforceable or respected. If you are considering terminating your parental rights ànd have been promised àn open adoption? Go talk to people at Concerned United Birthparents.

So it's "let's buy dna test kits to gift people with" time of the year and the "don't use dna testing kits because evil people will one day figure out how to use your dna against you" folks are giving their annual warnings. As an adoptee who needed to use one to find her parents, please don't. 🥚

Awareness shouldn’t end on November 30th. Tell the full story — all year.

Absolutely agree with this!
Poverty isn’t neglect.

Most kids in foster care aren’t there because of abuse, they’re there because their parents couldn’t afford food, housing, or childcare.

The solution isn’t foster care. It’s ending poverty.

as with every tale the colonizer tells about the people they have vanquished, every adopter’s story is a variant on “it had to be this way; it was for the best.”

adoption cannot be understood without its underpinnings in colonization and conquest. it is strategic forgetting. an adopted child’s history begins at the point of acquisition; everything prior is set aside, obscured in myth.

Simple question, not a simple answer.

Understand that the industry that sold us has deliberately made it very difficult, if not impossible, for us to find our families. We cannot just decide to find them. 🥚 #adoption

no one is willing to be genuinely radical about #adoption—to go to the root of it. we criticize calling adoption “trafficking” so we can evade the truth that adoption is chattelization. we marketize parenthood. we re-engineer children’s very identities for the sake of fulfilling our own dreams.
almost no one looks squarely at #adoption as a central issue of children’s rights. Even people who see themselves as espousing the most radical left liberationist stance toward the rights of children to affirm their voices & identities typically ignore how adoption denies this right to children.

there is no more blatant a stamp of ownership over a person’s identity than the “amended” birth certificate that erases a child’s genealogical history and substitutes a fictitious one for the benefit of the child’s adopters. this document is a property deed to the child’s identity.
