‘Your words are not your children’ -Prof. Benjamin Daise (my first phil professor)
What’s the most significant advice you received from a teacher?

I had a Geology prof who always said “have strong opinions, loosely held”

Be passionate, assess alternatives with conviction, take sides. But don’t fall so in love with your opinions that you can’t change them with better data.

I think this means that too many Labour MPs now own £1.5mn houses. Since they think of themselves as ordinary people it follows that a tax that hits them will hit “ordinary people”.
I sometimes feel like I am going mad.

Owning a £1.5m home is not normal in London or the South East of England.

It’s now clear that information on U.S. government websites can no longer be trusted.

It’s both heartbreaking and infuriating to see how quickly this administration has undermined science, public health, and the credibility of our scientific institutions.

‘The driving factor behind the change is that more British nationals are thought to have emigrated in 2024 than initially recorded, with 100,000 fewer now thought to be living in the UK.’

Two pearls of wisdom from one of my favourite phil profs who marked up a draft of mine in red marker so badly I thought I was going to barely pass the Phil of Science grad seminar he was convening only to find on the last page that the work was ‘tracking a low A’.
