Perpetually vacillating between despondency over the state of things and drive to fix it. (she/her)
Small but persistent irritation about the Twitter to X shift: I keep having a brief moment of intrigue that my coworkers have shared an XKCD cartoon before realizing, no, they're sharing a post on X. Much less fun.

Two years ago, we wrote in the Guardian: "The CDC is beholden to corporations and lost our trust."

With today's news about the CDC weakening COVID isolation guidance, likely influenced by corporate interests, this statement continues to sadly hold true.
The CDC is beholden to corporations and lost our trust. We need to start our own | The People's CDC
We’re epidemiologists, nurses and physicians, artists and biologists. We have come together with a common anger at the US government’s handling of Covid

FYI, if you use Dropbox, they automatically opted us all in for “Third-Party AI” which is shady as hell.

To fix, log into the desktop site, click on your account icon>settings>third party AI and turn it off.

“Small Child Becomes Leading Voice Of Climate Movement” is not an inspirational story.

It falls into the same trap as “Office Workers Donate Vacation Days To Pregnant Colleague So She Can Have Maternity Leave.”

Each is indicative of the world's total systemic failure to protect children.
The 12-year-old who halted COP28
It is indicative of the world's total systemic failure to slow climate change that a child feels she must do the job of adults.

Are you hosting a gathering? Want to give yourself and your guests a better chance of staying well for the holidays and avoiding long term harm from Covid? Here’s an air filter calculator to help you figure out what your room needs. A little wonky but I managed. 😌 filters.cleanairstars.com

Literally only had two town ballot questions in what was labelled a "Special Election" (because my town actually holds town elections on a Saturday in April 🤷) and yet I STILL got up and to my polling place before work. Get out and vote today, people!

Everyone who was on USENET, IRC or had a blog looking at Millennials being labeled "First Gen Social Media Users":

First-Gen Social Media Users Have Nowhere to Go
The collective erosion of X, Instagram, and Facebook marks a turning point for millennials, who are outgrowing a constant need to be plugged in.

I have, in fact, never wondered why Wikipedia wants so much money. It's one of the highest trafficked sites on the internet. The logistics of maintaining just the infrastructure must be very complicated. It also doesn't have ads.

I have often wondered why Elon Musk wants so much money.
Must suck to realize that there are some forms of epistemic grounding that you and your pals can't simply purchase and torch to the ground.

This is so real. I’ve reported on this over the years in many forms. Coral reef scientists. Conservationists caring for endlings. Public health workers in the pandemic. Journalists covering all the above. The people bearing witness are not okay.
One unexpected thing in my qualitative study w natural scientists (one-hour interviews) is how deeply, deeply sad the climate scientists are. They say things like "you have enough information from us, why won't anyone act?" -- the psychological distress these people are enduring is very great.

It was always obvious that the Campus Free Speech panic was going to produce laws like this.
Proposed Florida rule bans public univ activities "intended to achieve a desired result related to social issues," defined as "topics that polarize or divide society among political, ideological, moral, or religious beliefs, positions, or norms." USF lawyer: "I can’t think of anything that doesn't."
Florida rule would limit talk of ‘social issues’ at public universities
Critics say a proposed regulation is too broad and could inhibit free speech.
