The main thing that soured me on mastodon was that it made me feel like a dirty bigot for wanting quote tweet. I know this is a privileged position, but to this day I still don't understand why it was a tool for abuse.

In the latter case, we just accept that technical systems have lifecycle phases (though they may not have discrete programmed deaths like many organisms). Think "giant oak tree" though. It may live indefinitely, but it's really not amenable to relocation or even radical reshaping past a given point.
