so much of the fascist movement country is supported by the belief that parents own their children and have a right to ensure they turn out a specific way

Our preprint and much other work was only possible because of data generated by the CDC STD lab, which was shuttered in the HHS layoffs last week. This is a huge blow to efforts to monitor resistance, guide clinical care, & inform policy www.statnews.com/2025/04/05/c... @helenbranswell.bsky.social

Drug-resistant gonorrhea, a form of the widespread sexually transmitted infection, is considered an urgent health threat worldwide. The US has just lost its ability to detect it.

Please forward this thread on Bhattacharya’s terrible recent writing to as many people as you can.

Jay Bhattacharya has his Senate hearing today, and the NYT publishes a fawning opinion essay about him (just as happened during the Kavanaugh and Gorsuch hearings). People are trying to whitewash him.
Another thing that should scare all scientists from Bhattacharya's CV:
In 2020 he pivoted to popular press COVID denial work.

Here's his "commentary and op-ed" CV section.

It is frightening. Article after article in the far-right press attacking science.

🌈💫Did you know that government jobs used to be awarded through a patronage/spoils system? This changed in 1895 when Teddy Roosevelt implemented merit-based civil service positions.

maybe democrats accepting and adopting the bullshit claim that all government regulations and services are bad was a mistake, in retrospect 🙄

This is right, and scientists should read this thread.

Musk’s last decade of behavior is driven by a fight: tech billionaires against Silicon Valley engineers and scientists.
Now he’s bringing that class war to government. And NIH/NSF. He wants to oppress scientists.
5/ through the documentation of the different contracts. A friend of mine explains that a huge amount of the shift in the Silicon Valley world over the last decade is essentially a class war between the billionaires and staff making $400k or $500k a year, with the former convinced that the latter...

at least 50% of the entire country's economy is directly related to Federal spending

the trough is wide and deep and sustains entire state budgets
There are also not actually enough *other jobs* out there to accommodate all of the people in government, academia, aid, and NGO jobs that the Musk/Trump junta are currently rendering unemployed.

Just because many will want to make a career pivot out doesn’t mean they’ll be able to.
making the educated bourgeois class and the CIA and the FBI and the military mad at you within a month of seizing power is certainly a choice that the Musk/Trump junta is making

Great thread. NIH provides crucial funding to support education and health in every state.
You can check your state’s 2023 numbers and see how many jobs may be at risk:

Federally Qualified Health Centers were established by law in 1965 and expanded in Obamacare. They are crucial in serving rural and urban populations.

It is illegal for anyone in the executive branch to unilaterally block FQHC funds, that should go triple for freelancer billionaires.
Donald Trump and Elon Musk have cut off funding for half of the health centers that serve 400,000 Virginians, forcing some to close, which could mean up to 200,000 Virginians are suddenly without healthcare
