Once again, yes, I'm familiar with the different revenue streams involved. And yet once again, I want to point out that the entire federal budget for area studies & foreign language fellowships was $86 million.

with the firing of Hugh Freeze at Auburn, US universities now owe nearly $200 million to ex-football coaches
the amount US universities are paying non-working football coaches will soon top $140 million, if you thought we were gonna cure cancer or something any time soon

Massive escalation at the ICE facility. Federal agents made multiple arrests (at least 4), threw out gas, and shot tons of pepper balls.
Heard one of the people arrested screaming minutes later. Not possible to get a visual.

In cities, street space is a really scarce (and under-valued) commodity. Increasing vehicle size costs everyone.
And vehicle weight determines your impact on the wear-and-tear of cities.
So this kind of public policy is really just common sense.

On Sunday, #Zürich residents voted 52.8% in favor of increasing parking fees for cars according to weight.
The owner of a BMW X2 (Diesel), which weighs 1,675 kilograms, will now pay equivalent of €717 Euros per year to park on a public street. (Before, about €321.)
Direct democracy!

A belief of mine that I’ve not only questioned but almost completely reversed is that people respond politically to their materiel conditions. Since COVID I think most people live in a world mostly mediated by what they see on TV or their phones and respond more to that than to reality

Thinking of this quote again in light of the Korea / ICE debacle at the Georgia auto plant.
I thought this passage from Karl Polyani's "The Great Transformation" (1944) was particularly apt for our time.
"The outstanding discovery of recent historical and anthropological research is that man’s economy, as a rule, is submerged in his social relationships." 1/4
