Sometimes, we might use language that can make non-binary people feel excluded or unwelcome - even when we don't mean to.

LLMs and generative AI are fruit of the poisoned tree, and the plagiarism is one of the three main reasons why. The ecological impact is another (excellent work by @jamesmodonnell.bsky.social and @caseycrownhart.bsky.social for @technologyreview.com):
We did the math on AI’s energy footprint. Here’s the story you haven’t heard.
The emissions from individual AI text, image, and video queries seem small—until you add up what the industry isn’t tracking and consider where it’s heading next.

"Women are PIs on 58% of the canceled grants, although they are PIs on only 34% of all active NSF grants.

Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."
Another scoop from Jeff Mervis (@policyhound.bsky.social): NSF's ~1400 grant terminations have disproportionately affected PIs from groups underrepresented in science: women, racial & ethnic minorities, & those with disabilities. 1/3

The absence of trans people from the British media is part of the problem. I'd like to offer mentoring to trans people trying to get into journalism, free of charge. Most of my experience is obviously in political commentary, but I might be passably useful in news and other areas.

This is such an important point. Re - sponsors if you know of someone deserving nominate them for awards, recommend them for speaking slots at meetings. It isn't that difficult to do and it could make a real difference in someone's career.
There are Role Models, Mentors, and Sponsors. All are critical to professional development at different stages of a career. I was fortunate to have had RMs, cultivated Ms of many aspects of my work, and had Sponsors who recognized my contributions and nominated me for other activities or awards.
If you have assigned mentors - be sure they know about your grant applications and all your accomplishments. Find mentors if you don't have them and ask for help. No matter how embarrassing it might feel, ask colleague to read your grants and help you make them better. /8
