Ok so I've got a lot of new academic followers and I need to warn you that my feed is about 15% academic stuff and 85% dogs, cats and bread making. I also like to see what people are knitting/crocheting. So basically I like knowing other academics but mostly for the non-academic stuff you post!
Due to who I am as a person I am very early but at least the getting here went smoothly!

I am trying to steel myself to drive in the rain (which I hate) to attend an unpleasant medical appointment and the desire to just dive back under my duvet is STRONG.

What weirdo lets off fireworks in torrential rain!?

On annual leave today so spent a few hours finishing off the bulb table and a few other pots ready for next spring 🌱 I've run out of bulbs now so I need a trip to the garden centre! Also the winter garlic is starting to show signs of life which is a bit exciting (if you're me, anyway 😆)

I need to start writing my Christmas cards so I need recommendations for films to set the mood. Need to not be horrendous but also not good enough to merit sitting down with my wife and actually paying attention to them 🎄

I went for a wheelchair and a comically large umbrella

Oof my car has failed its MOT and needs ~£250 of repairs on top of the £230 MOT + service. Could have been worse I suppose but the bank account has taken a significant battering this month (I should not have got my eyes tested and the car serviced in the same month so close to Christmas!)

I have to go and pick up my new glasses this morning and I'm not sure if I'm going to need a wheelchair or a kayak ☔

Instagram seems to be showing me a lot of videos of people making "anti-inflammatory" meals and I don't think I have seen a single one yet that I would not be horribly allergic to so perhaps maybe people's bodies don't all respond the same way to food? 😂

Really interesting and insightful thread 👇
still fleshing out this theory (pun intended, I guess?) but there is so much magical and symbolic thinking going on when people talk about "nutrition"

people seem to food as a source of not just potential biological contagion, but social, and, even weirder, symbolic contagion via sympathetic magic

Started the day with a revise & resubmit on one of my PhD articles; pretty minor revisions and a very complimentary comment from the editor. It would be nice if this was over the line sooner rather than later!

Spent a solid 3hrs this morning panicking over something that it transpires does not need to be panicked over. I have learned no lessons.

Shame only the male team member is referred to as Dr, despite both named researchers having PhDs...

I appear to have run out of weekend, which is a shame as I was having a nice time...

Book 43 of 2025

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova
Started: 14/10/25
Finished: 08/11/25
⭐⭐⭐ 3.5/5

I enjoyed the detail that went into it in the beginning, but as the plot picked up pace it felt like it lost that richness and by the end it felt rushed & I had a lot of unanswered questions.

So I've only just realised that cosy fantasy is a thing. I absolutely loved Legends & Lattes and will be reading the rest of that series, but can anyone recommend any others that specifically do not have sex scenes in them thank you (this seems a BIG thing in fantasy literature!? 😅) 💙📚

I could do without many more nights of dreaming about high school, thank you brain

I have successfully installed the new printer without getting stuck under the desk (which seemed a distinct possibility at one point). Does it scan? Not yet, but we have printing so that's half the battle.

I appear to be the only one on my timeline that didn't watch Traitors but I'm not sure I could cope with that many weeks of Claudia Winkleman's fringe...

I may have learned a few lessons this afternoon about perhaps next time wearing latex gloves when refilling my fountain pen

I have MCAS and I react to paint. The decorator just asked me to check if a particular paint was OK and I wasn't really concentrating because I was thinking about something else so despite the fact the tin said high VOC...

I SNIFFED IT 🙄🙈

Had an eye test today and was pleased to see that our local Specsavers seems to have a "see a mask, wear a mask" policy.

In other news, I tried on about half the glasses in the store and then got them to order the exact same frames that I currently have 😂

Made it to bed. Then realised I hadn't taken my evening meds. Made it back to bed. Then realised neither of us had let the dog out. I dread to think what else I've forgotten but I'm in bed for the third time and I'm not getting up again 😂
