If you are using the "NVidia App", I suggest promptly going in to the settings, looking under "Notifications" and turning off "Available Rewards". If you do not do this, it apparently now uses the Windows notification system to show you fucking ads (for random video games)

I feel like this is how Firefox has worked for me for many years? Maybe I toggled this at some point and forgot about it?
This might go some way towards what you’re looking for (but not exactly).

about:config in the address bar

In that page search:

browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite

Set it to true.

This will remember the last place you saved a file to for each website you download from

So what's The Good Spreadsheet Software on Linux these days? Specifically for saving to Excel-format and not having Excel users see a broken mess?

I've been informed informed that it's not LibreOffice, apparently. Or at least not the build of it that's in mainline Ubuntu.

(Asking for a friend.)

This is really neat in general, but also that diagram would make _such_ a good inspiration for a necromantic abomination.

Or, you know, Halloween lawn decoration.
While birds and bats both developed adaptations for flight, the way they went about it is so fundamentally different it affects their possible ecological adaptation. Specifically, birds can easily shift to a walking lifestyle, bats can't. 🧪

Overheard at dinner today: "...and I have to find a new shrooms dealer, because my old one was canceled by the clown community!"

[They clarified that it was over handling of finances, and he is still around to an extent because she's dating one of the clowns, but it's a weird age gap relationship.]

Oh god how long ago did Slack a) change all channel visibility to Active Only (something that must be un-toggled in every channel group) and b) completely hide all muted channels under a menu.

If I'm still in a channel but have muted it, it's for a reason! I don't want to forget the channel exists!

Doesn't talk about all the block-pushing puzzles, but otherwise I feel like this really captures the core experience of playing Vagrant Story.

The head of my area group in grad school complimented the clarity of my academic writing, and that genuinely made the "pros" list when I was debating whether "Klara" would make a good girl name.

Yes, I've also gotten many heartfelt compliments from friends and lovers over the years, but, like...
What is the best compliment you ever received? Putting aside whether or not you believed it.

LRS is why I order from random indie bookstores instead of bookshop dot org. Well, that and the print quality.

BUT ALSO, if you're like "I'm not made of book money", remember that libraries get more funding the more they're used, and the purchases they make (including of ebooks!) help authors too.

At my store it’s one or maybe two
I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

I'm sure this isn't a new observation, but I wonder how many bugs have made it to production precisely because GitHub displays "file deleted [click to expand]" so similarly to "large diffs not displayed by default [click to expand]".

(Sorry for posting about programming here.)

I know that I've talked up @stechlab-labels.bsky.social's "posts a lot" labels as signs that maybe someone's posting through it and you shouldn't click through when you see them quoted. I stand by that.

But even more predictive are @aimod.social's "AI avatar/banner" and "frequent AI imagery" labels

This is where I wish this bot had citations, because this sounds kinda different from any of the LeGuin I've read.
I know perfectly well he's a god, too. But what I think is, he'll be much godlier after he's dead.

I feel like this year, at least around here, we've had a perfectly normal range of fall weather, but shuffled so as to occur in a highly abnormal order.

To me the weirdest part is all the mostly, sometimes entirely green leaves now lying on the ground, as the trees haven't known what to do either.

I think Carol Sturka of Plur1bus may have outdone Steven Quartz Universe in terms of (for in-character reasons that make perfect sense) frustratingly never asking the clarifying questions that the audience really wants answers to.

Or, at least, nerds in the audience who are real into worldbuilding.

Could we get this circulated again? I'm so sorry to ask but I had to push my root canal back a week because I couldn't afford it. I'm still going back-and-forth with the bank about fixing my situation. It's exhausting and I'm a bit broken at the moment to be honest. Any help would be amazing. Ty🖤🖤🖤
Hi y'all I very prematurely closed my old gfm and I've started a new one. Things are quite dire and it's looking like I'm going to need to hire a lawyer which I can't afford. Your help would mean the world to me truly.

Y’all, things are dire since my car has been stolen a week before our move. We were counting on having it. Things have been really rough & being on disability, which I’ve been on since my lymphoma diagnosis, limits my budget drastically. If you can help or share I’d be grateful.
