at some point you have to assume that they're not being gamed, this is what they want.
There is a certain pattern here:

-Gamed on WhiteWater
-Gamed on Iraq WMD
-Gamed on "but her emails"
-Bullied into dumping Public Editor
-Gamed on DEI etc by Rufo etc
-Gamed on this horrible latest piece, + rationalization.

Something seems really wrong at our most influential news institution.
The NYT's Zohran Mamdani hit piece crosses a line for me as a journalist. here's @lopatto.bsky.social's clear-eyed take on the genuine travesty of it all www.theverge.com/culture/7000...

The only newsworthy items from the NYT hit on Mamdani are:

1. NYT reporters are apparently chummy with white nationalists who spout eugenics

2. NYT editors apparently believe their peers are trolls like Chris Rufo

3. NYT "standards" for using hacked materials are not actually followed

I love that former NYT public editor @sulliview.bsky.social is public-editing from the outside.

"With this made-up scandal, combined with the pre-election editorial, the Times looks like it’s on a crusade against Mamdani.

"And no lofty explanation about the mission can disguise it."

Just to recap — a white “straight news” reporter at the NYT can make the comments in the first post freely, but a black opinion columnist cannot post the second and third.

Sneering about the “woke left” “enforcing language”? OK!

Saying white supremacists might not be trusted sources? No! No!!!

I refuse to spend my holiday posting about the NYT, but I will say, Patrick Healy is and always will be a sentient typo who has never met a boot he didn’t want to tongue-fuck. Know that and know peace.
Patrick Healy, NYT assistant managing editor for Standards and Trust, wrote a thread on how the Zohran Mamdani/Columbia story came together:

Oh man. I just realized that the Times reporter who reads the eugenics substack and was the lead writer on the piece sourced from its author randomly popped up in my mentions in May.

He was defending an anti-trans protester I criticized. I blocked him. He whined.

If Mamdani’s college application was newsworthy, the decision of a major newspaper to print hacked materials provided by a white supremacist seems a *bit* more so.

The only discussion here going forward should be about the NYT’s journalistic failures and political biases

Let me get this straight you want to replace the hydrogen in the Hindenburg with some other lighter than air gas a year before it’s due to land in New Jersey?
Let me get this straight. You want to do a total rebuild of the Democratic party a year before the most important midterms in history?

Are you OK?

Are you high?

I have low expectations for @kirstengillibrand.bsky.social, and even I was shocked by the naked Islamophobia that she was engaging in, including falsely accusing him of "global jihad".

I called her office and told them that this behavior is unacceptable from a sitting senator

We were very happy to give this scoop to @marisakabas.bsky.social's The Handbasket because it is important to support independent journalists who are doing the hard work at this time. Giving this story to Marisa also guarantees it will be in The Washington Post verbatim exactly 48 hours later.
EXCLUSIVE — The Onion has a full-page ad in today’s NYT featuring part of an editorial calling out congressional fecklessness towards Trump. They also sent a copy of their latest issue to every lawmaker.

My report, with an excerpt from the full editorial: www.thehandbasket.co/p/exclusive-...

Pretty amazing that a former president will sit quietly as one of his successors orders US troops into American cities and ships innocent people off to concentration camps—but feels compelled to speak up when a fellow HR nightmare is at risk of losing to another member of the same party.

It is true that sometimes New York City is frightening. For example today these men were loitering in the hallway of the 12th floor of the federal building.
