It’s not yet known whether Waymo vehicles were deliberately targeted. This year the LAPD revealed it had obtained footage from a Waymo driverless car as part of an investigation, indicating that they are being used as potential sources of surveillance footage. Waymo has been contacted for comment.

to be clear, research shows “nonlethal” tools are not safe—and can be deadly

In LA, officers deployed tear gas and shot rubber bullets at protesters fighting against ICE raids.

Here’s a reminder that those anti-protest weapons—which are billed as relatively safe—can actually cause serious harm.

The US Department of Transportation is significantly loosening crash reporting requirements, according to a new framework released today.

It’s a boon for the automotive industry as a whole—and for Elon Musk’s Tesla in particular.
In a Boon for Tesla, Feds Weaken Rules for Reporting on Self-Driving
A new autonomous vehicle framework would also make it easier for Tesla and other companies to research domestically-made self-driving cars that don’t meet all federal safety standards.

Regular reminder that Richard Dawkins is not an expert on sex, gender, or human sexuality

He is talking over thousands of scientists who have studied trans health for decades

He is an ignorant bigot who never recovered from the atheist movement politely asking him to respect women and brown people
Ample peer reviewed, legitimate scientific research has shown trans people have a genetic component like any other behavioral trait

All major medical and scientific organizations support gender affirming care as effective and live saving

You are the embodiment of Dunning Krueger. How embarrassing

I've observed this reasoning from tech powers over & over

outsize, vague mission --> performing absolute commitment ("de facto good") --> even deadly harm is justified in pursuit

(cf. Crisis Text Line deciding a mission to "end mental illness" meant using intimate data for profit was fine)

I can’t tell you the amount of contempt real coders have for Musk’s stolen valor at pretending to be technical. His years (decades?) of pseudo-code revealing that he doesn’t actually know how software works are so offensive to genuinely talented developers that they’ve always hated him.
elon could fake being a business and technology genius forever and everyone would have thrown cash at him endlessly, but no, he had to pretend to be a poster and gamer tok and America was like hold up
Has to be rough for Elon to know that his popularity is inversely correlated with his public exposure. People thought this guy was a genius before he started posting in earnest

Things COVID has proven:

1) The job you were told couldn’t be done remotely, can be done remotely.

2) Many disabled workers could have been working from home, but corporations just didn’t want them to.

3) Internet is a utility and not a luxury.

4) Universal healthcare is a necessity.
