A lot of people have very correctly noted that most authors do not make close to a living wage. This is true in the US, the world's biggest Anglophone book market - so you don't even want to *know* how little authors whose primary market is non-American make.

Y'all. This is what I mean when I encourage readers to ask for my books at bookstores and libraries. It makes a real difference to the authors you love. And we truly appreciate it 🙏🏾
I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

LAWDHAVMERCY 😩😩😩
You've seen "men would rather dismantle the Federal Government than go to therapy"

now get ready for

"Men would rather ask ChatGPT what you want for Christmas than just asking you for a list of what you want for Christmas"
Don’t know what to buy your loved ones for Christmas? Just ask ChatGPT

After turning off the stupid AI foolishness that Google tried to sneak into Gmail on some ungodly hour opt out not opt in BS, my inbox is a hot mess. But I'll deal with it rather than be forced to participate in some tech bro scheme to make money by devaluing critical thinking.

What we are seeing with Klay Thompson is what happens with other men don’t deem their woman worthy. It’s the exact same thing they did to Russ over Ciara.

Nobody ever spoke about either of their private lives until they were with women they don’t believe deserve to be treated respectfully.

If you're buying gifts for the holidays, maybe consider supporting artists, writers, creators. Gift someone a Patreon, commission an art piece, buy a book, purchase handmade jewelry, etc. Your support means everything.

If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

"We are not our ancestors" is not gonna yet us through this moment. You better wish you were your ancestors who survived the middle passage, chattel slavery, who consistently revolted, who made ways as maroons. We definitely need to connect with Black legacies of survival for now.

Very much this.
Not for nothing, but when these wannabe ass folk come from privileged backgrounds, they create problems for marginalized folk like me within the industry.
Their lazy schlock occupies shelf space and resources that should go to someone who actually cares, regardless of background.
There are wayyyyy fewer people who want to do the act of writing vs people who want to be known as writers.
That’s part of Audra Winter’s problem, I think. She doesn’t actually like writing, but she wants to BE a writer.
If you don’t derive any benefit from the act of writing, no pleasure or catharsis or satisfaction, why are you doing it? This isn’t meant to be an aggressive question, I’m not demanding an answer, but it’s a thing you may want to ask yourself. Life is short and you could do something else?

The desperate need to accumulate more and more at the cost of everyone else’s wellbeing should be classified as a mental disorder, and I will absolutely die on this hill.
Guillermo del Toro on wealth: "a wealthy man is a man who has enough, not a man that needs more. If you have enough to invite someone for a beer? You're rich. If you have a yacht, planes, islands, and you still need more? You're not rich."

Thinking a lot about the ways my duties as a caregiver have limited my access to rest, pleasure, and peace of mind.
Tomorrow is my birthday and I'm at home, listening to my son beatbox.
There were things I wanted to do, nothing fancy. I'll manage some, not all. It's frustrating.

I should be asleep at this hour. However I am tasked with the care of a young adult w special needs, meaning I'm researching sleep and eating disorders on the innanet instead.
Sleep is a basic human need and I haven't had consistent rest in 20 years.
"Tired" doesn't quite cover it.😮‍💨

With every fiber of my being, I hope for the day when white people will just tend to their own business, and free themselves from the exhausting, repetitive cycle of trying to conquer and control everything and everyone.
😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨
I keep thinking about how so many global conflicts boil down to one thing:

White people don't know how leave people alone. That's it.

Baltimore is seeing the city’s fewest homicides in 50 years. Here’s why.
Multiple people have taken credit for the historic drop that mirrors a national decrease in violent crimes. Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott says it’s due to a community-based approach to gun violence.

one thing the AI uptick has shown is that people resent creatives so much for what they perceive to be "not real work." and that means creating a narrative that people are overpaid for things they don't perceive as important/valuable, but still form entire consumer identities around.
