Tariffs are usually used as a subtle way to protect your important sectors from undercutting by your trade partners. They're intended to raise prices on certain imports to make them less attractive to domestic buyers. But if you don't actually make those goods yourself, tariffs just cause inflation.

When #Brexit benefits failed to materialise, true believers said, 'It's okay if we suffer, it's worth it.'
We currently see the same in the US. Voters who sought lower food prices see them increase instead (tariffs are paid by consumers, people!) & say, 'It's patriotic to pay more for groceries.'
