Ideological tensions between progressives and moderates have proven key to the Liberals’ reputation as arguably the most successful brokerage party in the West. But under Carney, these tensions are becoming more pronounced, writes Andrew Perez. www.nationalobserver.com/2026/01/08/o...
In 2026, Carney’s biggest political challenge could emerge from within his own ranks
While the prime minister's early policy and political wins have demonstrated discipline and focus, they have also exposed age-old fault lines between progressives and the fiscal and economic moderates...

Dwight is a rural landowner in Two Hills, #Alberta.

12 years ago, he was forced to host a gas well on his land, on the condition that the industry fully close and clean it up when the well stopped producing.

That never happened.

Crazy stat to contemplate:
In 2024 China added almost exactly 1
GW of solar and wind capacity per day (358 GW across the year) – a pace equivalent to
building a typical nuclear reactor every single day.

This resignation is worth noting. @simondonner.bsky.social is a man of impeccable integrity. If he is saying the process, and the politics, is compromised and broken, that does not bode well for climate action in Carney's Canada.

The notion that someone who is in their 20's can't have experienced climate change (supposedly due to an IPCC definition) is utter crap. It's embarrassing for a supposedly serious academic to be so disingenuous.

Three key points in my recent gov't testimony about Canada's climate efforts:
1) The 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan, though bolder than past plans, was not sufficient
2) That plan is not being sufficiently implemented
3) Good climate policy is in the long-term economic interests of Canada

Carney will delay incoming sales mandates for zero-emission vehicles, and “amend” regulations for cleaner fuels to help automakers and other businesses hit by tariffs and support the biofuel sector.
