For someone who claims to be a castle botherer, I realise I haven't actually posted a picture of one. This is Longtown Castle, just about in England - the Welsh border is very close by. The mid C12 keep seen through the gatehouse of the inner bailey with its portcullis slot on the left.

Good morning from the Welsh borders. What are your favourite trees? Our weeping ash has die back, and it may be time to replace. I’m attempting to counteract my sadness by planning to plant something incredibly cool as a replacement. Ginkgo?

Happy to see #fridayreads starting to flourish here! I'm currently enjoying The Red Scholar's Wake by Aliette de Bodard: pirate space opera politics and intrigue, with sentient ships in the mix.

Hi, I’m Katy and if my brain was as big as my mouth I’d go far in life, yikes
Hi, I'm KJ, and I'm a nice girl but my home economics teacher would not give me a job doing her ironing.
Introduce yourself with your worst feedback from school:

Hi, I'm Michael and I got the highest average but I don't actually deserve it because I never seem to make an effort to participate in classes

For lovers of snow ❄️ I give you the greatest snow ball fight in history. In 1854 300 people including stock brokers went into snowy battle at Liverpool’s Exhange. The Liverpool Mercury reported “Hats flew away, By the force of the ball, From heads that were grey, Or with no hair at all”.

It’s nearly a year since we arrived at Belsay Hall on another snowy morning. Ingrid Pollard’s installation explored deep time, bringing in the outside world of slate, wood and ancient stone, with a fantastic team of expert staff and volunteers. 74 years ago today, Tom Rout was ploughing when he turned up one of most iconic British archaeological finds - the Great torc.

The finds went through treasure process & Tom was awarded £1850. Compared to his £5 weekly salary, this was a huge amount of money.
