1. Federal funding for research promotes tech, biomedical, and scientific discovery in the US, and provides training for the sci/tech workforce that has brought immeasurable wealth to the US over the past 75 years.

Today's executive order includes a provision that will obliterate both functions.

Inspired by @jtuttlekeane.bsky.social and @ohdearz.bsky.social, here's what the White House proposed budget cuts to NASA would do to the entirety of the agency's Science Mission Directorate.

Bloodbath is right.

The Presidents Budget Request for NASA is out. It’s a bloodbath

Canceled are DAVINCI, VERITAS, Juno, OSIRIS-APEX, US participation in ExoMars and EnVision…

Huge cut to R&A. No funding to begin development of the Uranus Orbiter.

If you’ve ever cared about NASA, time to contact congress.

The president's budget request for NSF FY26 is also out. It zeroes out the NSF astronomy & astrophysics and NSF MPS ASCEND postdoc fellowships. nsf-gov-resources.nsf.gov/files/00-NSF...

This makes me so angry. The support available in the USA for STEM education research has led to so many amazing improvements and innovations in how we educate future scientists and the general public. It was an example for other countries to follow. 🎢 🍎 ⚛️👩‍🔬 #WithoutNSF #SaveNSF
🧪 Data update on NSF grant terminations

Including last Friday's terminations, STEM education grants now account for...

54% of terminated NSF grants (751 of 1381)
75% of terminated NSF funding ($590M of $783M)

The next generation of scientists is being targeted.

Say it louder for the folks in the back.

NASA’s annual call for grant proposals is now 68 days late.
The canceled grands are shock and awe, but the real damage will come from the long-term (massive) reductions in funding to the entire US research ecosystem and the defunding of entire fields and initiatives for training, growing, and diversifying the research workforce.

NYT: One estimate finds that DOGE’s “firings, re-hirings, lost productivity and paid leave of thousands of workers” will actually COST taxpayers “upward of $135 billion this fiscal year.”

I'll take "Complete and Utter Hypocritical Bullshit" for 25 billion dollars, Alex. Oops, I mean 20 billion since Trump wants to cut NASA's science budget in half and devastate the agency.

Here’s a good thing you can do today if you have funds: support those recently fired within the space science community.

Just in case you thought that removing DEI criteria would mean that everyone is competing equally: NIH is removing grad students from underrepresented backgrounds from the applicant pool altogether. Their applications will not be considered. Other students, not from these backgrounds, will be.
