When I was student teaching, the university observer asked me if I realized how much I sigh during instruction. She asked “what’s that about?” I told her to pull up a chair. I don’t think she laughed.

Nowadays I can’t imagine what my ratio of sighs:class must be.
I’m mostly off of other social media, and not really missing it. Yet I feel kinda out of loop if I’m not on something. Otherwise what am I supposed to do? Talk to friends irl? Write in my notebook? Please.

Thinking about the Jill Lepore “students got difficult in 2016” thing: there’s a point for all of us when “youth opinion,” such as it is, no longer feels intuitive. It happened for me in the last few years. To understand where they’re coming from, you might have to do a little research.

This AFT state council delegate agrees 1000%. Historically, one drawback to the "union of professionals" branding is that it has often provided cover for collaborations with management that are bad for education and bad for education *workers*. No need for my union to boost AI in this way.
surely the most shameful thing in my 15 years as an AFT member organizer bargainer and leader
The American Federation of Teachers, the US' second-largest teachers' union, plans to start an AI training hub with $23M from Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic (Natasha Singer/New York Times)

I found a great spreadsheet template to track my running. Managed to mess up *something* and it may be the event that triggers a complete mental breakdown. Stay tuned.

At tonight’s Philly School Board meeting, they tried to make people show ID to get in, tried to say only registered speakers could sit in the auditorium, and I believe they set up rows of 6 chairs compared to previous meetings having 8-9.

Some of my colleagues were in buildings that couldn’t warm up past 50 last week
You can't be on the "forefront" of using AI in schools and use "best practices."

You also can't “be on the leading edge” and "mitigating against any risks.”

This is all wasteful, unethical BS distracting schools from their core missions.
Philly schools could be on the forefront of using AI. Here’s what that means.
The district already has guidelines in place, but “Pioneering AI in School Systems,” scheduled to begin in March, will train staff in best practices and possible risks.

There’s no “responsible incorporation” of a technology that demonstrates every single bad habit that education is supposed to wean out of students - from making things up to citing sources you haven’t read to using other people’s work without proper permission to even just reading broadly.
👇 Students will be using AI (heavily) whether you like it or not. The challenge for us as educators is to incorporate AI responsibly into our classroom to facilitate learning. We can have a debate on what method is best, but the response "AI is bad, don't use it" doesn't engage with reality.
Yeah, the big issue I’m running into is that students will just go to mainstream LLMs to get explanations rather than find other resources or ask *me* questions - and the LLMs are trained on 2010s LinkedIn/Medium data science slop so they end up with the wrong understanding.
