We're told the FDA is now making plans to end most of its routine food safety inspections

That oversight work would be effectively outsourced to state and local authorities, under this plan

I just walked out of the joint congressional address because Trump is lying to the American people.

No matter what Trump claimed in his address tonight, Americans can see the truth.

Every single time this discourse resurfaces, it winds up being less about money and time and almost entirely about people hating the idea of leftovers
as someone on the zoomer/millennial boundary i feel there's a legit problem with people not knowing how to purchase groceries

Are we supposed to refrain from pointing out that he has neither the legal authority to do any of this nor any coherent plan to bring it about? I’m not up on the latest politesse.

Okay, now that we're thinking about Substack and both its cultural influence and its business model, can I walk you all through the economics? Because they make no sense, and we can use that to predict how things are going to go... (Caution:🧵)

This was one thing that kept coming up for me during Ezra Klein’s frustrating podcast w Vivek R. a few weeks ago. Does he not understand the impact of simply the firing of so many people from solid dependable jobs, much less the general chaos that would ensue? (I mean...obviously he doesn’t. But…)
You may think firing federal employees is a DC problem but the person who delivers your mail is a federal employee. 85% of federal employees live outside the DC metro. In many places, they are around 10% or more of the local workforce. #giftlink

See where federal workers live in the U.S.
As a government shutdown looms, see where U.S. federal employees live. Only 15 percent of the 2.19 million federal employees work in the Washington metro area.

The Daily opened today with the claim that Elon Musk was appointed to a new government agency. What is going on. @nytimes.com you need to do your job. This is not a government agency. That should be explained clearly, at the top.

My plea to reporters is to not call it the Department of Government Efficiency. It is not a Department. It is almost certainly going to a Federal Advisory Committee, and it is very important that reporters accurately convey that Vivek and Elon are working on an advisory committee.

there has to be a better way than sounding an alarm every single time a deranged trump-related story drops. it's unhealthy and unsustainable. we need to find a way to stay informed without spiking cortisol and without losing sight of the bigger picture. i'm just...not sure how.
