Head of NASA Sean Duffy intends to destroy a satellite that collects key data on carbon dioxide and plant health, by causing it to burn up in the atmosphere. The U.S. Dept of Agriculture and private agriculture firms use the data to forecast crop yield, drought conditions and more.
Why a NASA satellite that scientists and farmers rely on may be destroyed on purpose
The Trump administration has asked NASA staffers to draw up plans to end at least two satellite missions that measure carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, according to current and former NASA employees.

For those who asked: this article is now temporarily open access for everyone.
My latest for American Scientist Magazine helps give scientists the tools to fight back against politicized charges that our research is silly or pointless- tools that will work whether you’re asked “why are we funding this” from your asshole uncle at Thanksgiving or an asshole US Senator.

“Why Are We Funding This?”
Long-standing myths about “silly science” have contributed to the reckless slashing of government-supported research.

After 239 days and 6,300 miles at sea, a mini-boat built by Lincoln County high schoolers through the Oregon Coast STEM Hub made landfall on a remote atoll in Palau. It was recovered by a local team in impressive condition! Read about its journey here.

It's not just Columbia, it's not just DEI, and it's not just biomedical research: Trump's war on universities has frozen crucial science at institutions like Princeton, Cornell, Northwestern, and more. Our @nature.com team spoke to some of the affected scientists: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
How Trump’s attack on universities is putting research in peril
Scientists have little information as the US government freezes and cancels their funding.

Scary AF
To summarize, the AG’s position is that officers can enter someone’s home to arrest them, without judicial oversight, based on minimal evidence, and send them without trial or any form of due process on a one way trip to an inhuman gulag overseas from which there is no return.

What have we become?

NOAA’s office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research’s main contract for its websites was not approved for renewal, so I’m told we should expect some of them to start to go down.

“Lutnick's position on every contract is ‘no’ and agency reps have roughly a minute and a half to convince him otherwise.”

Those trying to understand the tariffs as economic policy are dangerously naive.

No, the tariffs are a tool to collapse our democracy. A means to compel loyalty from every business that will need to petition Trump for relief.
