This sucks!
Today, Paste Magazine shuttered all its non-music verticals, a choice I am both professionally and personally heartbroken about. Sadly, I am once again looking for a place that wants to let me write about Books and TV on the regular, so hit me up if that’s you or anyone you know.

How does one market a videogame in 2025. This is a serious question

Probably gotta sell what remains of my magic collection to pay for yet another car repair. Fortunately, it seems like magic is just gonna get worse

I do agree that the market for "professional" game's writing is basically non-existent, but there are plenty of blog posts getting posted every week on sites like @critdistance.bsky.social to basically no attention. social media as a way to discourse and share work has become a dead end, imo.

my hot take is that the fantasy that’s being catered to with videos like the one going around is of participation in a seamless, infinite, directed loop where the player and computer are constantly updating each other. which is where I think a lot of the satisfaction in systemic video games is. 🧵
this is stupid but at some point i think we have to confront the fact that there appears to be a not insignificant demand for videogames to be the holodeck, an infinite virtual playground you can basically live in. except even holodeck programs were actually written by someone, right?
Oh my god some fucking tech dingdong posted this on Twitter with the caption "AI games are going to be amazing" totally seriously, you have to watch it. You have to. In full screen.

100% co-sign. Marx did in fact have AI dialed in, somehow
I know it's a real cliché but I still think Karl Marx is one of the most important theorists to read if you want to understand capital's obsession with generative AI. This is from pg 692-93 of the Grundrisse.

This is not a good look, but: I am out of money and my car has broken down for the third time in a month. I have just moved across the country. I need a little help to make it through September: gofund.me/47e4a1856

Lessons from this cross-country move: I am too poor to have ever thought I should be allowed to own things. Can't afford to move 'em! Can't afford help! No one will buy them!

So, what are the odds of someone like me, with no online following to really speak of, raising like $1,500 to move across the country?

I have long said that the dream of a huge number of video games is "what if capitalism but it worked"
84% of indie video games are basically like, 'What if you were employed'

I've been playing the original Death Stranding and, having now reached chapter 8, I think I've stopped believing this game is going to become good. It's just a slightly slower open world action game! With bad characters!

Bumping this one more time - it's in dire need of a boost!
If you're looking for a distraction, I've got a new video essay out about character-driven storytelling, Choice and Forgiveness in, well, a shooter whose whole bit is being irreverent. I think this is a fun one! (link below)

In addition to the speculative asset-ification of trading cards that's taken hold, for the boosters specifically there's also the parasitic economy of pack-opening content, where viewers get to by proxy experience the expenditure of opening an expensive pack w/nothing in it
I went to a regional "market for collectors" the other day and saw people engaged in Wall Street-esque table trading of Pokemon cards for marginal speculative value. People constantly checking apps, walking from table to table, buying boosters at really high rates. 2/

I spent some time this spring learning unreal. Wanted to make an fps where you could throw things. The CASCADE of questions and problems that emerged from this desire is captured well in this thread:
chipping in my take on this:
It's amazing how fiddly making a game can be. There's a conflict between the boilerplate systems built to make Stuff you find in modern engines and the need to hand-tune things to make any game actually feel good. That friction is where a huge amount of dev time is spent
It's here! A story I've wanted to do for years and have been working on for months. I asked over 40 game devs one question: what is something that people get wrong about how games are made? Most of those devs are in here, some will be in a... future story. www.gamesradar.com/games/game-d...
