Remembering Bernardus ‘Ben’ Pon, born #OnThisDay in ’36, who won his class at Le Mans in ’61 & ’67, & raced just once in #F1, at Zandvoort in ’62, in this cute Ecurie Maarsbergen Porsche 787. He spun on lap 3, the car flipped, he flew out, & he landed in a bush, uninjured. (1/2)

Sad to hear that Enzo Osella died yesterday aged 86.
His Osella Squadra Corse team competed enthusiastically in F1 from 1980 - 1990, twice finishing in the points. Osella also built cars for F3, F2 & sports car racing.

#OnThisDay in ’52, in an #F2 race at Grenzlandring, a 9km oval made of public roads near Wegberg, Germany, Helmut Niedermayr crashed his Veritas Meteor into the crowd, killing 14 & injuring 31. It was one of motorsport’s darkest days, now largely forgotten. Who won? Who cares? 😔

Local racer Carel Godin de Beaufort (Porsche 718) retired after an engine failure on lap 8. This, de Beaufort's 26th GP, would be his last. In August, he would sadly lose his life during qualifying for the German GP.
