I got laid off today, with the rest of 18F.

18F was an elite federal software shop. We made gov't websites work better, more efficiently for the American people. We saved taxpayers from getting screwed over by contractors. And were fired for it.

We made this website to tell our story:
18f.org
We're not done yet | 18F

Woke up thinking about Zelensky being asked “Why don’t you wear a suit?” yesterday and remembered the time Winston Churchill also did not wear a suit visiting the White House during an active war.

When I started - one week on hire, and 2-3 days at every new branch I worked at.

Currently - 3 days total
How much on the job training does your library provide to new staff? 📚

silver lining of our deteriorating relationship with the US is it's the perfect opportunity for Canadian provinces to finally break from Daylight Saving Time — no need for BC to wait for Washington, Oregon and California to get on board

Jesus tap dancing Christ I know I have put 0 effort into curating what I get here and so it's 90% library but the "LIBRARIANS ARE SUPERHEROS" bullshit from both within and without the profession is killing me
February 14, 2025 at 4:23 AM
lionizing your librarians does nothing. We are the second lowest paid degree-requiring profession. But we are paid by your municipalities, which respond to your votes and calls for action.

Pay us. Make the field worth being in so the people we need in it don't have to leave or take second jobs.
Do not mess with librarians. They let complete strangers borrow their books. For a living. Even the hardcovers. They are so much stronger than you know.

I did portraits for all my friends D&D characters! Drawing by me (on paper), colors by my friend (digital).

(scans the timeline) all those dystopian novels of the 'aughts and teens really romanticized what "resistance" looks like for a certain demographic huh.

I'm *in* that demographic but I don't know them like that.

the sad thing about bluesky is not many of my pals are here yet so nobody has context for how excited I am to be drawing regularly again

grad school rant: was very excited when my assigned group appeared to be quick to organize & divvy up work. Not sure how I ended up writing 4.5/9 pages by myself in a group of 3... And checking the citations. Booo.

“Do you think Jean Chrétien was a good prime minister or a bad prime minister?” Irrelevant. I think he’s an angry old French Canadian with one more good Shawinigan Handshake in him.

I think Canada should bring back Jean Chrétien as Prime Minister if only for like two weeks because he would absolutely use the power and opportunity to choke Donald Trump to death with his bare hands.

It takes a dedicated fist to put it through a wall
In my self-defense classes I focus on how most people are socially conditioned to follow the norms of a civilized, polite society — and there is a MENTAL SHIFT required to use violence to defend from violence.

I'm reminded of this while watching our elected officials dithering and delaying. 1/
