This cold outbreak was also impressive in how far south it pushed, even to #Miami, FL. The Miami International Airport #KMIA set its first record low (49°F) in more than a decade!

Between the last two record lows (11/2/14 to 11/11/25), there have been *97 new record highs* set at the airport. #FLwx

Fun with data:

In the last 24 hours, the NYS Mesonet's Schaghticoke station has had 3.51" (so far, most in NY). That's just .1" shy of a 24-hour record at that site.

In the 90 days *before* this period, they were the driest station in the whole state, with 4.1" (in east-central NY). #nywx

I get that the news cycle is packed right now, but I just heard from a colleague at the Smithsonian that this is fully a GIANT SQUID BEING EATEN BY A SPERM WHALE and it’s possibly the first ever confirmed video according to a friend at NOAA

The Main Development Region was first defined in a published paper in 1996 as the region "from ~ 10° to 20°N between the west coast of Africa and Central America." We commonly use 85° to 20°W for those longitude bounds, as illustrated on the map.

Useful terminology tidbit for Atlantic hurricane enthusiasts:
The "Main Development Region" (MDR) is a slice of the deep tropical Atlantic where "most major hurricanes begin developing". Importantly, the Caribbean Sea is included in it, and makes up nearly 40% of it!

11am: 95kt, 941hpa. NHC actually used the outer wind max and a larger surface reduction factor. Third lowest for 95kts, 2.77 standard deviations below the mean (962.3).

Might make the plot nicer tomorrow after work. Btw I have no idea what that 998hpa 85kt storm is. I'm pretty sure my code is ok..

Spain is having its worst year for wildfires.

In terms of square kilometers burned, the 2025 season far outstrips all previous years.

Many fires are still active.

Storm surge flooding and tropical storm conditions are expected in the NC Outer Banks beginning late Wed/Wed night, where Tropical Storm & Storm Surge Warnings are in effect. The storm surge will be accompanied by large waves, leading to beach erosion & overwash, making some roads impassible.

With Category 4 #HurricaneErin ripping ~20 ACE units so far (and 15-20 ACE to go), the 2025 #HurricaneSeason has rapidly vaulted out of the climatological basement— moving up from <30th percentile to date last week to nearly 80th percentile today.

More percentile gains from #Erin to come.

How fast was Hurricane Erin's intensification rate vs. past Atlantic storms?

It wasn't record shattering - but still in the uppermost ranks of Atlantic hurricanes, especially over a 6-hour period:

Additionally, microwave imagery from an SSMIS overpass (images courtesy CIMSS) from around 10 UTC indicates convection encircling the center of Erin. Such a signal is also consistent with imminent RI. Demonstrates the value of SSMIS for monitoring hurricanes.
